The Department: Seeking a balance between the kinds of instruction a student might obtain at a conservatory with that typically valued at a liberal arts institution, the St. Olaf College Music Department encourages in its students a high level of musical achievement enhanced by a breadth of general knowledge and learning experiences. The department offers both the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Arts degrees, with programs in performance, music education, church music, theory-composition, history-literature, and elective studies and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The music department includes 29 full-time and 33 part-time faculty members. Approximately 275 students are enrolled as music majors, and approximately 1000 of the college’s students are regularly involved in music through ensembles, lessons and course work. The nationally recognized St. Olaf Orchestra, St. Olaf Band and St. Olaf Choir all undertake major domestic tours each year as well as frequent international tours. Jazz I was recently named the top undergraduate jazz ensemble by Downbeat Magazine. Other ensembles include the Philharmonia, Norseman Band, Collegium Musicum and Chamber Singers, two jazz ensembles in addition to Jazz I, three handbell choirs and five other faculty-led choirs. Archived performances for all of these groups can be viewed online.
