That Night

Artist's Description
A friend died recently and there was a suspicion of suicide as he was found on the sofa with an empty wine bottle and an empty pill bottle. The autopsy took 3 weeks and in that time I wondered how someone I spoke to weekly, 50 years old, could 'out of the blue' take their own life. There was talk of mental health issues which had never been apparent to me? How, after being very close to someone for more than 30 years, could I not have been aware all was not right?Eventually the autopsy revealed he had fallen and died from bleeding of the brain...not a suicide! He probably fell and retired to the sofa to recover....but never did. This song relates the feelings I had in the period before the autopsy...when I reflected on our times together and thought I had failed him at the end by not noticing his struggles. It made me consider how many of my friends are reaching the end of their lives and I added some reflections on those life long relationships also....so everything in the song is true and actually happened in real life.

We believed we'd live forever
That this life would never end
There'd always be another summer
Just like we'd always be friends.....
Since we were kids we'd been together
Out on the town every week end
Shared our secrets, dreams and money
And all our troubles with girlfriends
------------------------------------------------
[Chorus]
Oh, nothing lasts forever
Knew we'd be friends until we died
Never thought you'd be the first to go
These tears can't tell me why?...
I thought we told each other everything
But you hid some things inside....
If I'd known it was the last time
I'd have stayed with you ...that night.
-------------------------------------------------
[Verse 2]
We thought we'd drive around the world
So we bought ourselves a van
Parked that rusty wreck outside your house
And it never moved again.....
We were often short of money
So there was always some new plan
Like selling ice-cold cola on the Beach
Or picking grapes in France.
-----------------------------------------------
[Chorus]
Oh, nothing lasts forever
Knew we'd be friends until we died
Never thought you'd be the first to go
These tears can't tell me why?...
I thought we told each other everything
But you hid some things inside....
If I'd known it was the last time
I'd have stayed with you... that night.
-----------------------------------------------

[Break]
You were always right beside me
Back to back through thick and thin
Now I stand outside your old front porch
But you're not there to wave me in.
-----------------------------------------------

[Verse 3]
And now there's just an emptiness
Nothing's like it used to be
Sometimes I think I hear your voice
Your secrets whispering to me?.....
I wish you'd told me everything
I guess some battles can't be seen
I'd have walked that road beside you
If you'd only let me in.
---------------------------------------------------
[Final Chorus]
Oh, nothing lasts forever
Knew we'd be friends until we died
Never thought you'd be the first to go
These tears can't tell me why?...
I thought we told each other everything
But you hid some things inside....
If I'd known it was the last time
I'd have stayed with you... that night.......
If I'd only known it was the last time....
I would have stayed with you.. that night......
