Three Bouquets
By Chuck S. Morgan
Verse 1
I was standin’ in the self-checkout line,
Just another Tuesday, killin’ time,
When an old man stepped up in front of me,
Looking worn down more than he should be.
Verse 2
Gray hair shaggy, stubble on his chin,
Faded plaid shirt with a hard day's work worn in.
Jeans hung loose and the shoes looked wrong,
Like he'd been on his feet too long.
Verse 3
Rough old hands that'll never come clean
Held three bouquets, the prettiest I'd seen,
Bright as Sunday against all that gray,
And I couldn't look a - way.
Chorus
Who were they for, those three bouquets?
Is there a wife waitin’ up to - night,
Hopin’ you didn't work too hard?
Or for a stone on a hill at dusk?
I'll never know, but I wonder still,
Lord, I hope somebody's glad you came.
Lord, I hope somebody's glad you came.
Verse 4
Maybe one's for a neighbor all alone,
Maybe one's for someone whose name's on a stone,
Maybe he's the kind who gives a - way the sun
Even when he's got none.
Bridge
He scanned them slow with those cracked old hands,
Held them like they were glass,
There was somethin’ gentle in that tired face
No hard day could take a - way.
Is there a porch light left on?
Is there someone who calls him home?
He looked lonely, maybe worried too,
I hope he's not out there on his own.
Verse 5
He turned to leave and I caught his eye,
Said, "Those sure are pretty," and he softly replied,
"Yes sir, they are," with a tired, kind smile,
And he walked out the door, and I watched him awhile.
Verse 6
I'll never know where those flowers went,
Whose door he knocked on, or what they meant,
But somewhere tonight, a porch light's on,
And I hope it's his, and he's not alone.
Final Chorus
Whoever they're for, those three bouquets,
Whether a wife or a stone on the hill,
I hope he's loved in a thousand ways,
Like he's loved somebody still.
And if there's some - one waitin’ in the dark,
Listenin’ for his old truck in the yard,
Lord, let him hear somebody say,
"I'm so glad you came."
Outro
Mister, I hope somebody's glad you came.
Lord knows, I'm glad you came.
