it was 2 o’clock in the morning and the doctor was in bed
when a shepherd knocked upon his door and this is what he said,
he said, "hey doc come quick i know its late but i don't give a darn
there's a pregnant lady out here she's in labor in the barn"

so the doc got up and grabbed his bags, said "shepherd boy, by heck,
if its some sheep your gittin me up to birth, i'll break your little neck"
but he came out and he followed - and it wasn't very far,
'till the shepherd pulled his sleeve and said, "she's there beneath that star"

"that's good", said doc, "it's dark out here, and we should thank the lord,
that star will light that barn up like a big maternity ward."

so the shepherd and the doctor stepped in from the wind and snow
the couple introduced themselves, she was Mary, he was joe
the doc examined Mary as she lay upon the hay
"the time is now" the doctor said "you're in a family way"

well the birth went fine and the doctor laid the child upon the sod
said, "congratulations, mary, joe, you've got a bouncing baby god"

and the barn lit up with angels when the doc announced the birth
and they sang out hallelujah peace and love to all the earth

the couple begged the doc to stay but he said "i have to leave
my wife won't like it if i work all night on christmas eve"
