Hunger Song

By Bob Golden
Too many times I wondered out loud and too many times I cried
And now the situation just cannot be denied
I can tell by the look on their starving face their bellies ain’t been fed
Their brains are ripe for picking now for a piece of week old bread
We’re selling corn for ethanol for an all time record gain
People argue back and forth but they don’t feel no pain
Let them try for a while to make it by on a cup of rice for a day
Then perhaps they might think twice
Before they clamp down on the vice
And find out that the world’s not nice
When you cannot afford the price to pay
The haves are never hungry the have nots never full
And some say distribution is the key
But we don’t have to hunger much with supermarkets at our touch
And no time to be worried or to see
That well fed members of the press belabor long their helplessness
But they’re all taking more than they can give
So politicians get to air their views
Pontificate on the evening news
While millions never get to choose
Or have the chance to pay their dues to live
The wide world of hunger is brought to you on hi def color TV
Sponsored by some worried folks who wanted you to see
That greed and exploitation harbor seeds of discontent
And no amount of pious prayer or foreign aid sent everywhere
Will never make a dent
The world awaits a miracle expecting us to pay
While sacred cows walk down the street
With starving people at their feet
The rhythm method’s lost its beat
And there is not enough to eat today
