First Verse
Six-year-old fingers folded in prayer.
Hands clenched tight as he whispered his cares.
Askin’ God for the one thing he’d never had,
a lovin’ man that he could call…Dad.

His Mom did her best to raise the boy right.
Often playin’ both roles never showin’.. stage fright.
Tried to marry her off each chance that he could,
To the mailman, preacher, or guys in the neighborhood.

Pre-Chorus
They say it takes a village. It makes sense to me.
But, just who was his bonus family?

Chorus
They might not have known it,
but they had themselves some Dad moments.
even if you’re not the father,
you can help mold a son or daughter.
A minute or two together,
can sometimes last forever.

Second Verse
Who taught him how to paint a fence, build a ragin’ fire?
Plant seeds, pull weeds, or even change a tire?
Hammer a nail, build up that tool kit?
Skip a stone and hug like you mean it?

Did an uncle make him a go-getter?
Did his papaw make that man much better?
Perhaps it was that local preacher?
Or, it could have been his sixth-grade teacher?

One chip off the block, one her mother’s clone.

Like don’t take life so seriously.
Things go well, be humble not conceited.
And, exactly how a woman should be treated.
