Eating Cheese and Crackers
By Don Livingston
Eating cheese and crackers
while watching tv. Elliot Ness was a hero to me
We'd watch him take the bad guys off the streets
And you can't forget ol' Cool Hand Luke
outsmarting boss man while shaking that bush.
These are just a few of my childhood memories.
So, take me down those forgotten roads.
Where imagination and dreams unfold
help me to believe once again.
That heroes still exist today.
And the bad guys will all get put away.
And that lonely ranger will ride again one day.
Playing cops and robbers
just past dusk the streetlight ended many a bust.
We'd pick up where we left off the next day.
Some kids had cap guns others had sticks.
When I yelled bang I seldom missed.
That ol' bad guy would have to stay right where he lay.
Yeah, take me down those forgotten roads.
Where imagination and dreams unfold.
Help me to believe once again.
That heroes still exist today.
And the bad guys will all get put away.
And that lonely ranger will ride again one day.
Well, I'm grown today, and I have a son.
I sit and watch him on his smartphone.
And I wonder how in the world could that be fun?
Sometimes I want to hand him a stick.
And holler bang just to see him twitch.
But the wife says I should just leave him alone.
But I want to take him down forgotten roads.
Where imagination and dreams unfold.
And help him to believe once again.
That heroes still exist today.
And the bad guys will all get put away.
And that lonely ranger will ride again one day.
