Mary-Sue, sweet Mary-Sue
So good at hiding what you're going through
Mary-Sue, oh Mary-Sue
That messed up face is quite the view

He called you up, too much to drink
Said, "Baby, come bust me out this clink"
You chewed your lip, rolled your teary eyes
Said, "Okay, but this is the last time"

Get to the truck
You're out of luck
Apologies already forgotten
You're thinking, is this rock bottom?

He's yelling at you
Glance in the rearview
to see your bloodshot eyes
shining in the passing headlights

Oh Mary-Sue, what to do?
I think it's time you make a move
Mary-Sue, what to do?
You can run away, but he'll come after you

You've had enough
You're feeling stuck
Something switches inside, decide
this is the last time

As his voice grows louder
You accelerate harder
You glance at his face
and it’s so filled with hate

You're full of nothing but fear
But when the road is clear
You steer off the road
Hit a big old oak

Oh Mary-Sue, it's a mess, that's true
Climb from the wreck, twinkling red and blue
Mary-Sue, a feeling that's new
The smoke is clearing to reveal the truth

The trunk took out the passenger door
Curses echo out no more
No screams, no cries;
just his cold dead eyes

Tell the cops you had a fight
Then out slips the lie
You say, "He grabbed the wheel, twisted and swerved,
wanted me to be more than hurt"

It wouldn't be the first time he'd wished you less than alive
But you flipped the script: you survived

Oh Mary-Sue, what did you do?
What you needed to, what you had to do
Mary-Sue, please keep in mind
You shouldn't do the time for his crime

You did what you needed to
You did what you had to do
You did what you needed to
You did what you had to do

You made it through
You made it through

Mary-Sue

For what it’s worth
I knew you felt the same
I could hear you loved me every time you called my name

And if it counts
I knew you had your doubts
But I adored you way back then, even if I don’t right now

This tragedy of miscommunication
Has led me to a painful realisation

You’ve got to say what you mean to really mean what you say
Hopefully, you’ll figure it out some day
I couldn’t read your mind
So I got left behind (your loss!)
Here’s a hot tip, girl: use your words

Well, if you want the honest truth (here goes)
If walls could talk they’d say way more than you
and I doubt they’d be so damn uncouth

You made me groan more than you made me moan
Wish I could go back and lose your number from my phone

This tragedy of miscommunication
Has led me to a painful realisation

You’ve got to say what you mean to really mean what you say
Hopefully you’ll figure it out some day
I couldn’t read your mind
So I got left behind (your loss!)
Here’s a hot tip, girl: use your words

Yeah, use your words and mean what you say (girl)
If you’d spoken up then I might not have gone away (your loss!)
Guess what? I couldn’t read your mind (who knew?)
This time, I’m the one saying goodbye (bye)

Goodbye: that’s my final word

Use Your Words

This bed it isn't empty
I got your ghost laying beside me
I wake to whispers of I love ya
A cold touch on my shoulder

You might be gone but you left yourself behind
I can see you everytime I close my eyes
You might be gone but I know you're here with me
Even if I can only hold you in my dreams

You said that you'd be here forever
Do you think somehow this is better?
I'm so sick of all this missing
I'm a guitar with only one string (it's frayed)

You might be gone but you left yourself behind
I can see you everytime I close my eyes
You might be gone but I know you're here with me
Even if I can only hold you in my dreams

I'm gonna open my eyes, and say goodbye
So sick of living in the shadows of a lie
Maybe I'll see you in the next life (oh)
I gotta move on with my own life (oh)

It's time to clean out what you left behind (everything)
Maybe I'll get some peace next time I close my eyes
You're gone, so stop haunting me (please)
And while you're at it get the hell out of my dreams
Get the hell out of my dreams

Left Behind
