Mary-Sue
By Molly Rushton
Mary-Sue, sweet Mary-Sue
So good at hiding what you're going through
Mary-Sue, oh Mary-Sue
That messed up face is quite the view
He called you up, too much to drink
Said, "Baby, come bust me out this clink"
You chewed your lip, rolled your teary eyes
Said, "Okay, but this is the last time"
Get to the truck
You're out of luck
Apologies already forgotten
You're thinking, is this rock bottom?
He's yelling at you
Glance in the rearview
to see your bloodshot eyes
shining in the passing headlights
Oh Mary-Sue, what to do?
I think it's time you make a move
Mary-Sue, what to do?
You can run away, but he'll come after you
You've had enough
You're feeling stuck
Something switches inside, decide
this is the last time
As his voice grows louder
You accelerate harder
You glance at his face
and it’s so filled with hate
You're full of nothing but fear
But when the road is clear
You steer off the road
Hit a big old oak
Oh Mary-Sue, it's a mess, that's true
Climb from the wreck, twinkling red and blue
Mary-Sue, a feeling that's new
The smoke is clearing to reveal the truth
The trunk took out the passenger door
Curses echo out no more
No screams, no cries;
just his cold dead eyes
Tell the cops you had a fight
Then out slips the lie
You say, "He grabbed the wheel, twisted and swerved,
wanted me to be more than hurt"
It wouldn't be the first time he'd wished you less than alive
But you flipped the script: you survived
Oh Mary-Sue, what did you do?
What you needed to, what you had to do
Mary-Sue, please keep in mind
You shouldn't do the time for his crime
You did what you needed to
You did what you had to do
You did what you needed to
You did what you had to do
You made it through
You made it through
