Some say the world has grown much colder
So they seek shelter from the storm
And in their hearts, as they grow older
They retreat from all its warmth
Some never live the life they long for
So they leave their souls to grieve
And in the darkness of their sorrow
They lose their will to dream

Some think the tree that grows the strongest
Is the one that stands alone
But it's the tree whose roots grow deepest
That stands up on its own
Through every heart there flows a river
Restless, wild and free
Every river must find its own way
Before it winds into the sea

When the gale seems unrelenting
And the night's forever long
Always know the hour's darkest
Just before the coming dawn
And as the sun's rays blaze the morning
So will blow the winds of change
For it's the flame that never falters
Whose light shines through the rain

THE FLAME

The streets are filled with hate tonight
The sky's blood red with rage
Where freedom's once again on trial
For letting all its colors wave
You can see the fire on the lake
The river walk's ablaze
Masked men hide behind the face of God
While their king courts fools and knaves

And as the sun sets on its namesake mall
A nation's back's against the wall
In a land where dreamers dreamed and once felt safe
And I think the time is coming
I think the time is coming
And I don't know how much longer we can wait

How much longer, how much longer?
How much longer, how much longer?
No, I don't know how much longer we can wait

We've seen this all before
Now it's at our own front door
It's time to put an end to all this madness
Democracy will never stand
Where fascist leaders wash their hands
Of the crimes they perpetrate
It's not too late
What are we waiting for?
What are we waiting for?

Now the night falls east of Eden
On this street where death was named
God bless the children's mother
That freedom couldn't save
So gather 'round and say a prayer
While they cover up her grave
And pray the light she leaves behind
Rekindles freedom's flame

The time for holding on is gone
The more we do, it just goes on and on
Lord knows, the time has come for things to change
And I think the time is coming
I think the time is coming
Now it's time for us to come in from the rain

And I think the time is coming
I think the time is coming
And I don't know how much longer we can wait

How much longer, how much longer?
How much longer, how much longer?
No, I don't know how much longer we can wait
I don't know how much longer we can wait

I THINK THE TIME IS COMING

Brave one, there will be another day
Let the wind carry you away
Over restless seas your heart once soared
To live forevermore
Forevermore

Little one, take your dreams and fly away
Tomorrow's a sunrise away
Waiting for you at heaven's door
Now the sky is yours
The sky is yours

And as the evening falls
I hear your last, long call
As you sail into the sun and slip away
And in the summers still to come
Into every setting sun
The shadow of your wings will find its way

Brave one, there will be another day
Let the wind carry you away
Over sunlit seas your soul will soar
Now the sky is yours
The sky is yours
Forevermore

If we could be like he was
If we could find it in our hearts
To love each other like he did
We wouldn't be the way we are
The world would be a better place to live

If we could see what he saw
If our eyes were like a child's
We'd see the beauty that's within
Each of us, the way he did
If only we would learn to just give in

We could be
Whatever we could dream of
We would see
Beyond what lies ahead
We'd never need
To pray and wonder
We'd all know
We'll be together in the end

If we could feel the way he felt
When we look into the eyes
Of someone who's in need
We'd see in them what he saw
The miracle of love in you and me

if we could be like he was
We'd find it in our hearts
To live in peace and harmony
Then we'd be much more than we are
And this world would be a better place to be

If we'd all be like he was
The world would be a better place to be

LIKE HE WAS (IF WE COULD BE)

There was a time
When I knew all I had to know
My world was smaller then
I still had time to grow

I stood my ground
Learned nothing new
Content with thinking
Everyone's like me and you

And there were days
When I questioned what I thought
And who I was

Life went on
And while the world was changing
I stood still
Surrounded by myself

And as time went on
I saw my future fading
Against my will
I was becoming someone else

And there were days
When I wondered
If that's who I really was

And there were days
When I was lonely
Filled with anger and despair
Going nowhere
With no one there to help me
And there were times
When I was all alone
Confused and scared
Barely holding on
Thinking no one cared about me

There were days
When I just gave up
When I thought I'd had enough

And over time
I sought out change
I learned to listen to the rain
It may sound strange
But I'm still myself
It took a while
For me to see
There's no one else like me
We're all who we choose to be
We have to find out for ourselves
We have to find out for ourselves

There was a time
When I knew all I had to know
My world was smaller then
I still had time to grow

There were days
When I didn't know I could
Or if I would
Somehow, I found my way
But, there were days
There were days
There were days

THERE WERE DAYS

If you see her
Hold her heart
The world's a bitter place
When you don't know who you are
I don't know why
Life has to be so hard
If she needs to cry
Cry with her

She may be down
And feeling blue
Lord knows, this life
Will do that to you
They say true hearts
Are hard to find
Stand in line
And cry with her

You know
She gets that way, sometimes
We all do
Some days you're riding high
Some days you lose
And if it comes to that
Don't run and hide
Stand by her side
And cry with her

We all have something
That's ours alone
Don't let her face it
On her own
And though she's hurting
Don't say a word
Hold her close
And cry with her

You know
She gets that way, sometimes
We all do
Some days you're riding high
Some days you lose
And when it comes to that
Don't run and hide
Stand by her side
And cry with her

They say true hearts
Are hard to find
Stand in line
And cry with her
Stand in line
Cry with her
Stand in line
Cry with her

CRY WITH HER

A sideways look
A corner smile
Another second glance
You start to think
There's something there
So you take a chance

You walk across the room
And ask her for a dance
She hesitates, then smiles
You take her by the hand
That's when you know
You'll never let her go

The music's soft
The lights are low
You can't feel your feet
Her eyes meet yours
You're in a trance
Your heart forgets to beat

She asks you where you are
You don't know what to say
She's right there with you
And in that moment's wake
When chance turns into fate
That's when you know

You can search forever
And never find the love you need
Then one day, love finds you
And it's everything you believe

And you can search forever
And never find the love you need
But should one day, love find you
You'll know it's meant to be

You look at her
She smiles back
What more do you need?
You realize then
You're richer than
You ever hope or dreamed

You can search forever
And never find the love you need
Then one day love finds you
Right where you should be
That's when you know
That's when you know
That's when you know

THAT'S WHEN YOU KNOW

Woke up a little colder this morning
I guess I'll have to get used to it
And I know I'm getting older
But I'm not ready to wear those shoes just yet

I've been looking past what comes today
Sometimes I think I'm somebody else
There's so many things to talk about
You must be wondering if I'm still myself

Outside, the rain keeps falling, falling down
The clouds know there's nothing they can do
And I sure am happy to have some time
To be alone with me and you

Come on, get out your red beret
Put on a little rouge
I'll put on a big old smile
And we'll have a laugh or two
You find that record we used to play
I'll get us a bottle of wine
You know, those lines are just some old heartstrings
You can play mine anytime

I'm gonna find me something to do
Tomorrow, if I get a chance
You know, I think I'm falling in love again
Won't you teach me how to dance?

Come on, get out your red beret
Put on a little rouge
I'll put on a big old smile
And we'll have a laugh or two
You find that record we used to play
I'll get us a bottle of wine
You know, those lines are just some old heartstrings
