The Open Road

We packed the boxes by the kitchen door
Left the old key on the hardwood floor
You held the map, I held my breath
Two quiet hearts with nothing left

If every road can turn us around
Why does goodbye feel so profound?

We chose the open road ahead
And all the words we never said
A little less of what we knew
A little more of me and you
We kept the promise in our hands
And crossed the line we couldn’t understand
Still, I’d rather lose the past we planned
Than the one we left behind

The morning train was running late
We watched the rain collect by the gate
Your sleeve was damp, your eyes were bright
We made a home from borrowed time

If every road can turn us around
Why does goodbye feel so profound?

We chose the open road ahead
And all the words we never said
A little less of what we knew
A little more of me and you
We kept the promise in our hands
And crossed the line we couldn’t understand
Still, I’d rather lose the past we planned
Than the one we left behind

Maybe someday, when the years move slow
We’ll see the reason we had to go
Not every ending means we failed
Some doors close so the truth can prevail

We chose the open road ahead
And all the words we never said
A little less of what we knew
A little more of me and you
We kept the promise in our hands
And crossed the line we couldn’t understand
Still, I’d rather lose the past we planned
Than the one we left behind

Than the one we left behind
