It’s been in our family for the best part of a century
I tried not to admit we’d have to sell the place eventually
Despite all of our sacrifice and trying so very hard
I just put up a damn for sale sign out in our front yard
It’s the sign of the times

It don’t look like much that piece of wood 3 feet across
And it can’t tell the stories of the kids and love and loss
50 years of jobs and dogs and boxes made of pine
The things that make a house a home, ain’t written on that sign

It’s the sign of the times, working folks they all feel the squeeze
The good life we once had has been lost to corporate greed
We’re losing our democracy and while the death knell chimes
All we here is hate and lies, it’s the sign of the times

Grand dad said they purchased it for right round seven grand
A house and barn and water well on a little piece of land
And they sure lived the good life here, but now a days the facts is
We spend more than they bought it for, just to pay the taxes

When I’d met my true love and I didn’t have a thing
She was overcome with pride, to wear my grandma‘s ring
But when she saw each month now there’s less money in our pocket
It broke my heart to here that she had gone into town to hock it

It’s funny I’ve never met the people that I’m supposed to hate
It turns out they’re just decent folks that suffer the same fate
There are millions of these for sale signs up all across the land
It’s time to find some common ground it’s time to make a stand
