The Man at the Window

By Thorsten Gabriel
One day in my street they will carry me out
Because nobody cared what became of the man at the window
They thought I was just there
But nobody knows that I am only waiting for death to overtake me

I sit at my window looking outside
Across the street the company is moving all the furniture out
The old man is no longer there his life has ended and death is near
I never would have thought the old man would just leave
But life has shown its ending

Every day he went out of the house
Routine carried its price
I could see him walking to the elderly citizens
Walking upright he made his way
Over the years his posture was no longer as high as his suffering a painful path
Walking straight became difficult for him
His posture was forgotten his life a discontinued product

Today is his funeral his apartment is empty
New tenants are moving in
Young people a couple with children and lots of energy
They are living out their youth
Now I am the old man across the street in that house

When I go to the window and look outside
I look into youth feel my bones and know this is my end
I am now the old man in the street waiting for the path that exists
Waiting for the time that is left for me

The man at the window who is now wrestling with death that is me
And nobody will help me when I perish
Everyone in the street has seen me
They will say that I am alive
But how it looks inside of me nobody knows for sure because I am the man at the window

One day in my street they will carry me out
Because nobody cared what became of the man at the window
They thought I was just there
But nobody knows that I am only waiting for death to overtake me
