Tunnel of Wasted Time
By Michael McConnell
Verse 1
Who would’ve thought when I walked out your door,
That’d be the last time I’d walk through it anymore.
Getting kicked out of the house hurt more than you knew,
That was the coldest night I’d ever lived through.
Verse 2
Through all those years, we were growing and thriving,
Happy adventures, inside jokes, and good times.
We had a way of making the ordinary shine,
And somehow in those moments I thought you were mine.
I tried to move you in but got shut down repeatedly,
Kept fighting for a future you couldn’t see with me.
I put my career on hold, never thought I’d do that,
Guess that’s the angel in me and I can’t take that back.
Chorus
Long days, short nights,
That’s when you know the whiskey’s hitting right.
Trying to drown out your memory,
That imprint you left behind in me.
Still stuck in a tunnel of wasted time,
Running from your ghost while you’re living your life.
It’s okay, you moved on so fast,
I know now, we were only meant to be a past.
We were only meant to be a past,
It’s troubling to think I almost missed the signs.
Kept telling myself we’d work out in time.
Verse 3
Deep down I knew your family wasn’t the right fit for mine,
But love has a way of making you go blind.
I thought if I loved you enough we’d find a way through,
But I can’t build a forever if I’m building it alone with you.
Bridge
You look forward, just end up looking back,
Shuffling through the memories we once had.
Wouldn’t have been honest with myself,
If I kept loving you and nobody else.
Chorus / Reprise
Long days, short nights,
Guess I’m finally getting through the whiskey nights.
Still feeling that imprint you left on me, still trying
To outrun your memory.
But I’m walking out this tunnel of wasted time,
Leaving your ghost and your shadow behind.
Final Verse / Outro
Who would’ve thought when I walked out your door,
That I’d never be the same as I was before.
Maybe we were never meant to last,
Just a lesson in love,
And the beautiful past.
