Loon

By Seth Carl
I thought I heard you call across the lake

A few beers in, your voice came on the wind

You take yourself too seriously, my friend

Slow down and smell the flowers, tell some jokes and make amends.

I swear I saw you flying in the sky

Up among the heavens, shining bright

Your silver wings all lit up by the moon

Calling out to me beyond the stars, too far to be my loon.

I thought I heard you cry beyond the stone

A wail or hoot to tell us how you’ve been

I held my breath and hoped you’d cry once more.

But you are lost out on the lake, and I am stuck here on the shore.

I swear I saw you flying in the sky

Up among the heavens, shining bright

Your silver wings all lit up by the moon

Calling out to me beyond the stars, too far to be my loon.

Nevermore, the raven states. Obscured by place and time.

And once again, I must pretend that everything is fine.

To carry on, and row about, and paddle in the deep.

With nothing more than your memory to haunt me in my sleep.

I thought I heard you call across the lake

A few beers in, your voice came on the wind.
