The Cornfield

By Stevie Coates
I hear the church clock chiming
Over golden fields that sway in a summers breeze
Silvery clouds go rolling by
In a sapphire sky in between the emerald trees

And Mother Nature sings her song to me
As I ly by a spring in the country I am free

I hear the sound of clapping wings
As a pigeon flys across the shadowy lane
The woodpecker drums the pollard oak
The farmer watches the clouds for signs of rain

And Mother Nature sings her song to me
As i ly by a spring in the country
I am free

I stop at a gate look back down memory lane
I paint the scene I’m a boy once again
I drink from the spring as the noon clock strikes the hour
I feel the patter of rain the beginning of a shower

In the Cornfield they prepare to harvest the wheat
Ambling down the lane go bleating a flock of sheep
