The Velveteen Rabbit Memory

By Oli Vera
There once was a girl who wanted the world
But soon enough realized it was too much
The cost was too great the wars were too bloody
The price of love meant her heart would break slowly
Year after year a piece of her fell
She fought battles valiantly but the enemy prevailed
They spun her around until she had no choice but
To welcome the sickness and smile at the world

Years went by and the sickness remained
The kind people don’t seem to notice right away
It keeps her mouth shut and her movements so small
Yet she keeps starting again to forget about it all

Memories of dusty tables
Piles of laundry, games, and candles
Memories that don’t like to wait
Every memory has a voice
Chants and songs, the prayer’s choice but
Memories can’t keep the sickness away

In all of the world what she grieved most was a book
A large purchase she made with all of her heart
It was a roadmap to show joy came to her world
She filled it with memories of happy days gone by

Memories of glee and giggles
Dances, movies, songs and riddles
Memories she scrapped all neat in the book
Every memory an airborne flu
Book’s been lost twas the proof she knew
Memories can’t keep the sickness away

In the back of her mind tears fall through the storm
As the grin on her face keeps the sickness at bay
If she only had the book, the proof of her worth
She would call back the angel that went from her home
And read the Velveteen Rabbit story again
