The Battle

By Jim Lovra
Midnight was a stallion; the best the world had seen
Dark as night and full of fight with a soul both hard and mean
At the rodeo he’d steal the show, destroying cowboy pride
He was known throughout the country as the horse no one could ride

The cowboy was a master skilled at breaking horses down
Hie eyes were cold, his boast was bold as he rode into town
“I’ve come to wear the stallion out his time has come at last
I’ll tame him, shame him guarantee, the legend will have passed”

There is no safety from the storm when stubborn wills collide
Until the fight is over and you know the victor’s side

The day of reckoning arrived excitement filled the air
Midnight’s heart was racing and the cowboy didn’t care
The chute flew open with a crash, the battle had begun
The crowd had risen to their feet till man or beast had won

With twists and turns, leaps and spins the war between them raged
The cowboy was a man possessed, the horse a demon caged
How would it end, no one could tell the crowd just stared in awe
One fateful move, the battle done and shock at what they saw

They buried horse and rider on a hill
Their spirits fighting as they always will
