The Water Just Knows

As I drove down an old rocky road in the woods
Thinking of all the ways life has cheated me
My truck chassis rattling as I tore around a bend
Thinking how my past is like a chain with an anchor on the end

My mind is the town movie theatre and I’m the matinee
It plays my big failures and all my mistakes
So go grab your popcorn, twizzlers and drinks
Settle down in your seats and watch all my ships sink

I pulled off the dusty road next to a babbling stream
Jumped down to the ground and took of my shoes
Sat on a rock and slipped my feet in the cool water
Wondering why I’m the king of falls and falters

And I watched the stream flow, flow, flow
All through the day flow, flow, flow
Never ever stops flow, flow, flow
The water just knows to go, go, go
Forward it flows, flows, flows, flows, flows
The water just knows

As the sun laid itself down on the dusky rose sky
I got back into my truck and started to cry
That stream it taught me a thing or two about forgiving
And that the past is for learning and the present is for living

I left it all on the bottom of that babbling stream
The chain and the anchor slipped away like a dream
You choose the past or the present
There’s no in-between

Just let the stream flow, flow, flow
All through the day flow, flow, flow
Never ever stops flow, flow, flow
The water just knows to go, go, go
Forward it flows, flows, flows, flows, flows
The water just knows
