Artist Feature: Sanjay Yadav

Sanjay Singh Yadav is an India-based songwriter notable for his affectionate and fun-loving composition ‘Never Love a Woman’ (http://www.songbay.co//view-lyric/1794/).

The lyric grabbed the semi-final slot in the prestigious  UK Songwriting Contest 2013. The following year, 2014, Yadav again hit the semi-final spot, this time with the lyric ‘To None Ever Bound’. The UK Songwriting Contest draws participants from all around the world. Its panel of judges consists of leading names in the international music industry.

Songwriters are often associated with the archetypal ‘Bohemian’ lifestyle, by contrast Yadav’s is somewhat more academic. He holds a doctorate, was a Chevening scholar at University of Cambridge and has delivered seminar presentations at Oxford!

Interestingly, Yadav acknowledges the dilemma facing writers from intellectual backgrounds. From his own perspective, he writes eloquently and fluently “with clarity and directness” but on the other, has to work harder to obtain “those allusive images of evocative ambiguity that work wonders in contemporary lyrics.”

His lyrical works consists of a small collection of songs entitled ‘Lamentations’, produced in the format of an e-book (available through the author). A larger work is a collection of poems, entitled ‘Portraits of India’. This is a volume of essays in verse that comment on various facets of India, its politics and society, its people and landscapes.  Yadav’s work has received high praise from the legendary Indian novelist and journalist Khushwant Singh. He described some of the verses in the ‘Portraits’ as an apt summation of “the mental state of Indians” and as verses “which deserved to be quoted”.

A good lyric, Yadav maintains, “should seek to capture some timeless truths of life. At a certain point good art merges with good science and is distinguishable only in form. In substance both purport to be a valid short-hand summation of our experience of the world.”
