Like the wind that blows through every valley
And makes your heart grow cold
As I sit here and put my pen to paper
Right now I’m feeling old.
And I want to say I’m sorry
For all those moments way back when
You wondered if I loved you
And would I say it ever again?

And I meant to love, I meant to love
I meant to say it all,
I picked up the phone so many times
But I never made the call.

The sound of a beating heart
It makes the world go round and round
But the sound of a heart that’s breaking
Echoes deeply underground.
I can’t forget your face
And the hurt behind your eyes
And the way you looked so anxious
As you waited my reply.

And I meant to love, I meant to love
I tried to say the words
Of some great mystery in my heart
Like a song you never heard.

And now I’m all alone
And boy, do I feel that regret
Cos now I’m done a-wandering
And my life is done and said.
I thought I had such special times
With no-one by my side
But now I find those moments
Washed away with the ebbing tide.

And I meant to love, I meant to love
I meant to say it all.
I meant to trust you with my heart
I was afraid I’d be a fool.
And I watched you love, I watched you love
I watched you drift away
And build a shield around your heart
To save it for another day.
And I tried to love, I tried to love
I tried to write a song
But writing was never my big thing
And the words just came out wrong.
And I meant to love, I meant to love
I meant to meant to love.
And I meant to love, I meant to love
I really meant to love.

I MEANT TO LOVE

REVELATION
The first time that you held my hand,
I dreamt we were walking in the promised land,
The first time you looked into my eyes,
Well, the rain just stopped, it was clear blue skies.

And I wanted to tell you this would never end,
I’d always be your childhood friend,
We’d take each other by the hand,
And run away to the promised land,
And I wanted…
Lord, I wanted…
Revelation.

We walked all through those country lanes,
And your smile got bigger, took away all pain,
And I put that rose right into your hair,
On the day we lived, without a care.

And I wanted to tell you this would never end,
I’d always be your childhood friend,
We’d take each other by the hand,
And run away to the promised land,
And I wanted…
Lord, I wanted…
Revelation.

The first time that I met your dad,
I just knew everything was gonna turn out bad,
He fixed me with his evil eye,
Like a black storm cloud in a bright July.

And I wanted to tell you that would someday end,
I’d always be your forever friend,
We’d take each other by the hand,
And run away to the promised land,
And I wanted…
Lord, I wanted…
Revelation.

Your last words burned right through my soul,
Like a poem thrown upon a red-hot coal,
As you cried and begged that we were through,
Because your daddy made sure, no more me and you.

And I wanted to tell you we would never part,
You’d always be my true sweetheart,
And we’d take each other by the hand,
And run away to that promised land,
And I wanted…
Lord, I wanted…
Revelation.

Now all those moments are lost in time,
Like tears in the rain, they’re no longer mine,
What happened to you I shall never know,
You’re like a dream that I had so many years ago.

And I wanted to tell you we would never end,
We’d always be, forever friends,
We’d hold each other in our hands,
And fly away to our promised land,
And I’m wanting…
Lord, I’m wanting…
Some Revelation…
THE END

SHE AIN’T HERE NO MORE

I like a beer before I eat
It makes me light upon my feet
That’s the last time I lie and cheat
Now she ain’t here no more.

(Musical break)

He said, boy that girl is leaving you
I said, what the hell am I supposed to do
He said, ain’t you tried to talk it through?
I said, she ain’t here no more.

I said, daddy that girl has upped and gone
He said, son this time you did her wrong
I said, maybe this time she won’t be long,
He said, she ain’t here no more!

(Musical break)

Another beer and I talk to myself
Her wedding ring’s there upon the shelf
I think this time I’m gonna need some help
Now she ain’t here no more.

The last time that I saw her ass
She jumped in the car and she hit the gas
I prayed so hard like I was saying Mass
Now she ain’t here no more.

(Musical break)

(Slow)
I close my eyes and I start to dance
I think I’m mister fancypants
I turn around to take her hand
But she ain’t here no more.

(Normal)

No, she ain’t here no more
No, she ain’t here no more
No, she ain’t here….
NO MORE!

About Me

Bio

I am originally from Cornwall; UK and now live in County Leitrim; Ireland. I have a BA(Hons) in Writing & Literature and I write short stories, screenplays and songs. I am from a working-class family and consider myself working-class. Since leaving school I have been a truck mechanic, art mover, tree surgeon, park-keeper. I have always been musical and something of a poet from a young age. I quit work more than once to be in bands and hit the road, but never achieved fame or financial success from those ventures. I'm happy now to sit down and write lyrics and tunes with the aid of my trusty old banjo. Perhaps you could do something amazing with my words - they are from the heart.

CV/History

I have played guitar since age 7 and have been in bands since I was 18 - starting off in gothic rock bands inspired by The Mission and The Cult, entering the joyous, drunken world of folk music a la The Pogues and The Levellers, then a bouncy, boisterous punk/ska band, and now really enjoying the country scene; especially influenced by Meredith Moon; The Steel Drivers; Billy Strings; Old Crow Medicine Show. I am a singer/songwriter and over the years I have played the following instruments: Electric 12-string guitar; Bass; Tin Whistle; Mandolin; Flute; Trombone (believe it!); and now, the love of my life: an open-back five-string banjo, Clawhammer Style!
