I lay awake and wonder,
What kind of spell I’m under,
That keeps me from the dreams I used to see.
Staring at the ceiling,
I get the strangest feeling,
That somehow I may never be set free.

‘Cause darkness aims to blind me. The demons want to find me.
I pray that I will make it through the night.

‘Til I can see the morning light.

I clutch the blanket tighter,
My knuckles turning whiter.
Yet still I grow so bitter cold.
My sense of hope is fleeting,
With shadows fast retreating,
This nightmare is beginning to unfold.

Then darkness falls so eerie.
The demons know I’m weary.
I question if I’ll make it through the night.

‘Til I can see the morning light.

My heart quickens it’s pounding.
The beat hard and resounding.
Why does night always torture me this way?
My confidence is shaken,
My very soul forsaken,
What must I do to reach a brand new day?

Then darkness overtakes me.
The demons vow to break me.
I don’t think that I’ll make it through the night.

‘Til I can see the morning light.

The dread seems so imposing.
I fight my eyelids’ closing.
I’m drifting off now I can tell.
My mind starts to engender,
The terms of my surrender,
As I slip noiseless through the gates of Hell.

So darkness now has beat me.
The demons laugh and greet me.
I know that I won’t make it through the night.

I’ll never get to see the morning light…

Gimme back my key and don't you come around no more.
I'm done with bein’ gracious, so just show yourself the door.
The secret's out, and now I know I'm not your only one.
So don't look so surprised to hear that me n’ you are done.

Don’t bother with apologizin' for the games you play. I been fixin' to be finished with you anyway.

Just drop the false bravado. I've suspected for awhile.
And don’t expect to see me cry, 'cause that just ain't my style.
The love you claim you had for me, was nothin’ but a show.
Now’s time for me to cowgirl up and time for you to go.

Ain't no way I'll change my mind and beg for you to stay. I been fixin' to be finished with you anyway.

It's been a long time comin' but I finally figured out.
How cold it is inside your heart and what you're all about.
So you just keep believin' that you're God's gift here on earth.
And I'll be sure to tell the world how much you're really worth.

Stop right there, I couldn't care less what you've got to say. I been fixin' to be finished with you anyway.

Your handsome looks and cowboy ways were quick to lasso me.
But I’ve removed the blinders and this filly's breakin' free.
I'm already over you, my future's lookin' bright.
I'll find myself a wrangler who knows how to treat me right.

The heartache that you caused me, is over with today. I been fixin' to be finished with you anyway.

Yeah, I been fixin' to be finished with you anyway.

About Me

Bio

I have more than 30 years experience in the fire service. I’ve been an amateur wordsmith through the year, mostly dabbling in poetic verse. Although I’m musically challenged, I’ve always thought it would be fun to write lyrics for songs.
