I felt the early chills of winter
Along that solitary mile
Sharp edged pebbles bit my shoes
My laces were untied
Tall stone walls that once gave shelter
Now lay tumbled on each side
Troubled dreams that bring no rest
Lingered deep into the night

I saw a shadow on the heather
I called oud but no reply
No one there to share a moment
No one there to tell me why

A silver thread that weaved a web
Of complication in my mind
Had now started to unravel
And was falling to the ground

I heard a footstep that moved softly
Quiet whispers in the trees
I felt a touch upon my shoulder
As I turned I realized
It was the gentle hand of friendship
That was walking by my side

A wandering grey mist
That swept in from the sea
And drifted slowly to the foothills
Had now vanished suddenly
Just beyond a steep incline
A destination that was hidden
Could now be clearly seen

In the silence of the evening
Tranquil pastures shining bright
Every window on a hill
Reflecting golden light
Out along that winding road
With each new turn throughout the day
It was the simple words of friendship
That helped me on the way
