LYRIC FOR SALE

By Sonia Portales

The other shore

[Verse 1]
We have to flee,
Death is chasing us.
We are running for our lives,
Sprinting to stay alive.

[Verse 2]
Before the war, birds were singing,
Children were playing and laughing.
The birds have long gone now,
Children are afraid, quiet and full of sorrow.

[Chorus]
But...
Across the sea, on the other shore,
There is hope, there is peace,
There is shelter and surcease.

[Verse 3]
Beneath our small, overcrowded dinghy,
Death is lurking, death is waiting.
We are human wildebeests,
Death wants to grab us in its jaws,
To snatch us from the sea below,
But we are longing to go to better pastures,
Despite the risks, DESPITE the risks, we must cross.

[Chorus X 2]
For...
Across the sea, on the other shore,
There is hope, there is peace,
There is shelter and surcease,

[Verse 4]
We have left everything behind, EVERYTHING.
Still, right now, I am the richest man in the world,
We are nearing the shore,
Come on, come on, a little closer.
I am still holding my family in my arms,
My wife and my children.
My most precious belongings,
ALL I OWN, ALL THAT’S PRECIOUS TO ME.

[Verse 5]
We shall go back home one day,
My beloved Syria, we shall COME BACK to you.
We kissed you goodbye my homeland,
Not farewell, not farewell.
A house can be rebuilt....

But for now....

[Chorus X 2]
Across the sea, on the other shore,
There is hope, there is peace,
There is shelter and surcease.

...And birds are singing.
