IT WILL END IN THE END (REQUIEM FOR AN AVERAGE MAN)

By Mykel
Desperate for a second chance
he'd sussed out every circumstance.
But in the end he knew the truth,
like a blind cat dancing on a hot tin roof.

---

He was about to fall from grace.
He'd played hard,
yet lost the race.
Didn't know when to cut the cord,
didn't know when to fall on his sword.

---

Don't get me wrong,
he'd tried for so long.
Worn the façade of someone strong.
But in the end he got too confused,
Couldn't decipher the tactics we used.
Threw in the towel to end his fight,
Became a shadow boxer in the winner's sights,
A shadow man in another world's light….

---

He'd driven himself insane they said,
listened too long to the voice in his head.
Passed far too many open doors
in which he'd stop to merely check the scores.
Made too many excuses not to enter,
Hung the edges, Not the centre.
Went through life as cool as ice,
then thought too hard, and paid the price.

---

Our bigotry made him compromise,
But 'till then he faked it well -
With lies.
Nobody saw the crosses he bore,
'till she saw the truth echo in his eyes.

---

He'd resisted the pressure to become like us,
Just another face on society's bus.
Resisted the pressure to buy and pollute.
Said "No" to licking the foreman's boot.

---

He'd pushed aside the temptation of status,
but stood to close to the One who created us.
He cared so much for his Mother's touch.
He loved so much, he almost made it.

---

But when he finally worked out life was shit
he lifted his sleeve for that one last hit.
Thought for a moment,
Then took aim,
And hoped the rush would end his pain.

---

No goodbyes
No final note
as he sailed another user's boat.
The fault lies not in his last action,
But in our conservative reaction.

---

So to be assured
we sit falsely secure
with the hope that we can always endure.
But was there a time when he thought the same?
A time before we forgot his name.
