That one truck stop was a little oasis
Last chance for gas in those wide open spaces
We were both feeling lonely on that desert highway
Silently wondering "are you headed my way?"

I felt something fleeting when our eyes first met
That familiar feeling I could never forget
We could go on alone and say goodbye forever
Or turn a new page and roll on together

So we tore off together in that old Corvette
A little too fast into the red sunset
We never thought twice 'bout what the future might hold
Didn't know we were headed down a dead end road

Pedal to the metal doing one oh five
With my hand on your lap I was feeling alive
You turned the radio up and rolled your window down
Just for kicks I turned the headlights out

Later when you asked if we could stop for the night
Somehow I missed that blue highway sign
I got turned around; I hit the brakes
We started to wonder if we'd made a mistake

On a pitch black night we were running blind
No headlights on past a dead end sign
It happened fast, but then it happened so slow
Stuck in a ditch down the dead end road

How'd it happen so fast? How'd it go so wrong?
Like the band stopped playing in the middle of the song
Next thing we knew we were dead in our tracks
We couldn't go forward and we couldn't go back

And it felt like we were stuck there for years
All that we shared were harsh words and tears
We got to the point we couldn't take any more
We both got out and we slammed the doors

We're not giving up; we didn't fail
It's more like breaking ourselves out of jail
Just 'cause we aren't lovers doesn't make us foes
We're walking each other up the dead end road

You never know what's behind the door you keep closed
I'm glad we went down that dead end road
