August oh August

By Steve Jones
The promise of August
is more comfortable days
and blue skies again.
Everyone is tempted by
her seductive ways.
She will deliver.
Her promise kept.

I want to breathe in August.
I want to run barefoot at the shore.
On the hard sand at low tide.
I'll start my run into the wind.

I want to see the blue sky
and body surf in August.
I want the rush.
Ride a wave to shore
then push myself up in
the shallow water.
Salt water fills all my pores.
I am the Atlantic.

August dances lightly
in the palm of my hand.
Then the wind takes her
away with the sand.

August oh August
where has the time gone.
Gone with
the carnival sounds
and the anticipation.
Gone with
the boardwalk sights
and all the sensations.
Gone with
the longboard surfers
that deny summer ends.
Seen only in telescope pictures
by family and friends.
