Smiling fondly
you still can remember when
love and you
walked hand in hand.
Now alone and every step is pain
and anguish holds you in it's hand.
Still, you hold onto one slim hope
that if you can keep from dying today
tomorrow you may live, not just be alive.
Pain and fantasy is all there is.

I want to tell you that things will get better.
I really do want to believe this.
But until I see so for myself.
I cannot say so to someone else.

Smiling fondly you still can remember when
you held a new life in your hands
as others gathered all around you.
A good day, so long ago.

I must have said that before
to someone I used to know.

You long for one more
warm Christmas cookie
you made with your mother.
And to pick one more tomato
in your grandfather's garden.
