A Fool's Tale

By Gareth John
When I hear a certain tune, the memory stirs,
My thoughts drift back to those wonderful years
My time with you was absolute bliss
Many years later, I'd realise this

The everlasting memory of your passionate kiss
This more than anything would I really miss
When we're together my world was one of calm
I would never appreciate all your charm

But then I started to take you for granted
The seeds of doubt in your mind were planted
You tried and tried to keep us as one
I laughed in your face, I was out for some fun

I cheated on you without really trying
When you found out, I left you crying
Why should I worry? I couldn't have cared
Life was for living, no opportunity spared

The world opened up for me, beyond my wildest dreams
If only I'd known, instant joy is not what it seems
So self-obsessed, the years, they simply flew
Having great times, surely this was my due

Then one day from the radio came a certain song
It was probably our favourite, we always sang along
I stood quite still and listened to this tune of old
And then it finally dawned, without you my world was cold

I closed my eyes and pictured you
It had to be a dozen years since
The vision of you crying
Still it made me wince

What a fool I'd been, I'd treated you so bad
I'd got what I wanted and lost what I had
If I persevered, I was sure I could find her
I'd recognise her alright, I needed no reminder

I contacted her friends and I was told the bird had flown
No forwarding address, whereabouts unknown
I'm still on the lookout for the girl from my past
I'll always keep searching, 'til I breathe my last
