Short Story
By Richard Heller
The first time I saw her waiting in the school canteen,
I thought she’d escaped from the cover of a magazine,
And every time she moved my eyes did a photo call,
Cos she’s drop-dead-gorgeous – but man, that girl is tall.
She’s the one and only in the world I ever wanted to love me,
But she’s not in my world at all, she’s so far above me.
Well, I’m not the kind of guy who would ever stand out in a crowd,
And there she is standing with her head kind of touching the clouds,
I tried to say “Hi!” but my tongue seemed to turn into glue
And she looked as if she’d heard a little mouse squeak by her shoe.
She’s the one and only in the world I ever wanted to love me,
But she’s not in my world at all, she’s so far above me.
A month’s gone by but I still haven’t found my voice
I look up to her so much but then I really haven’t got much choice.
If she stooped down low, she might just hear my beating heart
But as things stand I guess we’ll have to spend our lives apart.
She’s the one and only in the world I ever wanted to love me,
But she’s not in my world at all, she’s so far above me.
I’d love to be her toy boy or maybe her teddy bear
I’d nestle on her pillow and smell her fragrant hair.
I’d keep all her secrets and listen to her hopes and fears
And I’d be there for her when there’s no one else to mop her tears.
She’s the one and only in the world I ever wanted to love me,
But she’s not in my world at all, she’s so far above me.
I’m back in the canteen although I never want a thing to eat,
When she walks up beside me and sits down on the next door seat,
She says “I can’t wait any longer, I’ve simply got to let you know,
“I’ve watched you for a month, and I so wished you’d say Hello.”
She’s the one and only in the world I ever wanted to love me
And now we’re holding hands, although she’s still so far
Above me.
