Verse 1:
Forget about all the web trolls
get rid of them all.
All the cheaters and the leachers
they’ll just all have to fall.

Verse 2:
All I need to do is call with you
tell you all the jokes disguised as truth
though I think you already know it too.
I want to take you in my arms
say you’re ever the only voice in the room.
You’re tell me that I speak too much, too soon.

Verse 3:
So tell me all your dreams
they’ll be practical and seen.
I can be the designer
of your cloud high schemes.

Verse 4:
We’ll work through the night
by the antique fireside.
And in the morning we can laugh
Drink, Netflix, sex and chat.

Verse 5:
Just takes one time
Just takes one find.
Honey, we’re the X, the Y, the Z.
This is our time.
This is our time.

The X, The Y, The Z.

Verse 1:
I texted you when I was eighteen
it was ten times a day
no support from social teams
Best friends, oh yes indeed.
Till we became overwhelmed
and couldn’t accept the blame.
And our close friends agreed
that they felt the same.
And that was how things remained.
No one else knew about it
and no one else cared.
Back to when I found
just inspiration or mistaken.

Verse 2:
Back when everything I found
Inspiration or mistaken.
Rumours where just spoken
trolling not even a notion.
I believed that people thought
across the lands and oceans
that while we’d little information
others were generally good natured.
But yesterday I had a little cry
not just because they watched him die.
But cos of all the keyboard lies.
The faceless ones.
The nameless ones.
And while we still ask why
none of us are surprised.
I think back to when I found
Just inspiration or mistaken.

Verse 3:
Now the ladies call themselves Bitches
the men become feminine.
Children receiving pitches.
The nerds have taken the crown
elite left with offices of state.
The palaces, the security gates.
Public opinion doesn’t know
which way privacy goes.
But that battle lost long ago.
When we had to pay taxes
when we had to buy to eat.
So the nameless ones
and the faceless ones.
They’re our ghosts
they’re our shadows.

Ghosts And Shadows

Verse 1:
She sits down to coffee and an explanation
that only Google can provide.
Ten explanations on why it Is likely
we only laugh on the inside.

Chorus:
Working from home
and Ill do it.
Working from home
I’ll dress for it.
Working from home
don’t worry.
But just not right now
But just not right now.
But just not right now.

Verse 2:
Just a quick glance at that guys Facebook profile
status is still down as single.
Mebe hit him up for some kind of online chat
offer him a card in bingo.

Chorus x 1

Verse 3:
Kanye West blasting through walls from couple next door
I mean they’re seventy and white.
Saw an advert for a course to expand their minds
empowered now for the coming fight.

Chorus x 1

Verse 4:
My chosen champion of choice is Taylor Swift
emotion but not the volume.
Look up some reports on Kanye and Beyoncé
even strong can struggle making room.

Chorus x 1

Verse 5:
Need to make sure to stay properly hydrated
that cheese makes glorious sandwiches.
Does coconut water have expiry dates
can it be used to kill witches.

Chorus x 1

Verse 6:
I switch to analysing figures for accounts
interim assessment by three.
It’s eleven thirty opening the first page
still can’t find enough time for me.

Better Days To Come

Verse 1: (him)
I’m lying here on our bed
I’ve got my ex’s socks on.
That pair of novelty ones
Santa’s grown reindeer horns.
Can feel why you loved them so
know I have to let them go.
Don’t hate her cos she cheated
but now I distrust romance.
A tornado through my head
Ripped up my pass to the dance.

Verse 2:
I’ve known you for years - (joint duet)
seen you around the place. (joint duet)
Endless staff meetings (joint duet)
end-user database. – (joint duet)

We’ve exchanged the odd word - (joint duet)
we’re gallows mockingbirds. - (joint duet)

Barely stops for breath
I’m stifling yawns.
Wow, he can go on.

Verse 4: (him)
Will she say something.
That is her own thoughts
that’s got wins or loss.
Will she say something.

Verse 5: (duet)
Wow, thought they were mysterious
before we threw open this door.
Before I got to spend time with them
and now, like this, I’m not so sure.

A New Years Tale

Verse 1:
It’s a pretty good crowd for this place
and I wish we’d some idea what to do.
KJ’s twirling drum sticks to impress his girl
Fi’s fallen behind trying to look Noel Gallagher cool.
A death rattle distortion in Jimmy’s guitar
and the whole sound system is shot to hell.

Chorus:
Knew we should have put in extra rehearsals
get some unity between rhythm and cords
and point out to keyboards that less is more.
Told everyone else around to get out the door.

Verse 2:
Big thumbs up from the guy running the bar
though I have to say he’s Fi’s brother in law.
Crowd of young ones messing round at the back
more worried the brothers are ready for a brawl.
At least we got some money in advance
cos I’m pretty sure I spotted a line of ants.

Chorus x 1

Verse 3:
Why did I decide to go all Ziggy Stardust
it’s just as well that Fi hid all her lipstick.
I pushed this image so much in rehearsals
but it’s going down like a tone-deaf brick.
Thought it might get us some online buzz
but a few days offline might be the best of us.

Chorus x 1

Verse 4:
I can hear ‘Get the dress of’ by the end of song three
and I think we’re all playing in different keys.
I’ve a feeling we’re not all getting out in one piece.
But Fi leans in and says….
‘Who cares whose Lady Stardust
and whose gonna break our balls.
We’re doing what we want to do
and I spotted a back door in the hall.’
‘Who cares whose Lady Stardust
and whose gonna break our balls.
We’re doing what we want to do
and I spotted a back door in the hall.’
‘Who cares whose Lady Stardust
and whose gonna break our balls.
We’re doing what we want to do
and I spotted a back door in the hall.’

Who Cares Whose Lady Stardust

Verse 1:
There is something that I should have told you
when we shared that number eighteen bus.
When there were stone cracks on the windows
times when there was only the two of us.

Verse 2:
There is something that I should have told you
beyond in our course struggling with cut and paste.
I could remember the internet before it learnt to crawl
could see by the flow of your hands you werent displaced.

Verse 3:
There is something that I should have told you
before the person I would be had become defined.
The streetlights around us emphasised the shadows
only went back cos you highlighted different life-lines.

Verse 4:
There is something that I should have told you
I wanted to chat away from the bus’s rattles and hops.
Not to dread seeing the church which meant you got of
talk about subjects you wouldn’t hear in a grocery shop.

Verse 5:
Then inevitably the course came to a stop
never got around to telling you what I felt or think.
You joined your parents on the family holiday
didn’t meet up with us for the end of term drink.
And then I blinked, and thirty years passed
but I think the memory of those evenings will always last.

A New Years Tale

About Me

Bio

Hi, my name is Mark Downey, 42, from Belfast. I'm currently studying 'History of Art' through the Open University. For the last year I've also been writing song lyrics for various musical genres.

CV/History

I've been interested in creative writing since my teens and have wrote many short stories and poetry stanzas during this period, (some of which have been published in local magazines). I'm also a fan of most types of music, from jazz to heavy rock, and would have music playing for several hours a day. I've also attended hundreds of concerts. The likes of Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Suzanne Vega as well as local, less well known Irish acts. I believe that this mixture helps me to know what makes
