A Thousand Highways

By Callum H
There’s a crack running down the ceiling
Paint’s been peeling since last Spring
Kettle screaming on the stovetop
Like it’s got something to say to me.

Bills are stacked beside the fruit bowl
Red ink bleeding through the page
You’re dancing in the half-light
Like we never learned to be afraid.

You laugh like we’ve got money
Like the world’s not closing in
Like the weight we carry daily
Ain’t a fight we’re gonna win.

And I’ve chased a thousand highways
Looking for a cleaner start
But every road I ever took
Just led me to your heart.

See I don’t need no grand horizon
Or a life that feels brand new
If the days stay small and honest
And always end with you.

Let the stars belong to someone
Who’s still searching for a sign
And I’ve got something here beside me
That makes sense of all this time.

So if this house falls in around us
If the plans all come undone
I’ll still be standing in the wreckage
Still believing you’re the one.
