Melanin Crown
By McKinna Williams
[Intro, Soft piano, Vocal chops]
Yeah… mmh
For every shade, every crown
This for the queens, we hold it down
[Verse 1, Rapped Verse]
Brown skin glow with the sunlight kiss
History in my bones, can’t rewrite this
Edges laid, mind sharp like a thesis
From the struggle made gold, Midas pieces
They tried to box us in, we broke the frame
Turned pain into power, lit the flame
From braids to curls, every coil divine
Ancestral rhythm in every rhyme
[Pre-Chorus, Melodic]
They tried to dim our light, we amplify
Stand tall, we touch the sky
No filter needed, we beautify
Every tear we cried turned battle cry
[Chorus, Empowering Chorus, Gospel Choir]
Black girl magic, feel it in my soul
Melanin crown, yeah we in control
From the roots to the rise, let the whole world know
Black girls shining, watch the kingdom glow
Black girl magic, louder than before
Every scar a star, we even the score
Hands up high, let the love overflow
Black girls rising, watch the kingdom grow
[Verse 2, Rapped Verse]
From the block to the boardroom, we elevate
Heavy is the head but we levitate
Culture in our step, we innovate
Every “no” we heard, we renovate
Voices like thunder, can’t silence that
Built empires with a silk head wrap
Beauty in the depth, not just the glance
We the blueprint, give credit to that
[Bridge, Spoken Word, Minimal Beat]
Say her name with respect
See her light, don’t neglect
She a universe, complex, direct
Black girl—you the architect
[Break, Percussion Break]
(Clap, clap, clap)
Yeah, feel that rhythm
Heartbeat of a legacy
[Chorus, Gospel Choir, Stronger]
Black girl magic, feel it in my soul
Melanin crown, yeah we in control
From the roots to the rise, let the whole world know
Black girls shining, watch the kingdom glow
Black girl magic, louder than before
Every scar a star, we even the score
Hands up high, let the love overflow
Black girls rising, watch the kingdom grow
[Outro, Soft Choir, Fading]
Ooooh… queens, we rise
Ooooh… see the light in our eyes
Forever powerful, forever bold
Black girl magic, story untold
[End]
