TOUCHING HEAVEN

By Christopher Paul
When you were born
I held you in my arms
And I knew that I was touching heaven
And as you grew
I held on to you
Then one day I looked
And you were gone

And through the years
We'd see each other here and there
I'd lie awake and wonder where you were
I'd try to call you
But you were always falling
Then one day you said,
"Let go, I have to do this on my own"

And so I waited
And prayed each day you'd find a way
To live with who you are
And just when you
Were seeing your way through
I heard from you
Then you were gone
And now there's nothing left
For me to hold onto anymore

And so I wait
For when the moonlight casts its shadow on the wall
And I feel you in the brooding dark beside me
And though you're near as my next breath
Death's sacred veil slips between us
And it's as if you aren't really there at all

But you are
Your haunting presence is undeniable
And as the essence of a child, too soon a man
Makes union with the secrets of the night
You fill my senses with memories of chances missed
And the bittersweet taste of love's remiss

Soon the ancient scents
Of baby's breath and angel hair
Permeate the midnight air
With lofty dreams of youthful innocence
Once free of all despair and worries of a future lost
Now crushed and mangled far beyond repair

And as I wallow
In regret and the debt of countless misgivings
Your calming spirit appears above me
Shrouding me in grace and gratitude
Soothing my disheartened, weary soul
Holding me in heaven's arms

And as I wander
Into sleep's brief, peaceful respite
A gentle breeze eases through the curtains
The shadows shrink and disappear
And it's as if you were never really here at all
But you were
I know you were

When you were born
I held you in my arms
And I knew that I was touching heaven
And as you grew
I held on to you
Then one day I looked
And you were gone
