Just Not You

First saw her in a bar on a Saturday night
I remember thinkin’ what a beautiful sight
Could feel her energy
Somethin' new to me
Dancin’ with her friends under the lights

Kept goin’ back for a couple of weeks
‘Til I finally got the nerve to go up and speak
Just made her laugh
That was all that it took
Knew right then my heart was hers to keep

So much laughter and joy for the months ahead
Just couldn’t believe I got to share her bed
Talkin’ straight from the heart
We were barely apart
Wasn’t long before I love you she said

We went on just like this for quite a while
Within a few years we walked down the aisle
She was just like a dream
And forever it seemed
Nothin’ could ever take away my smile

But as the years rolled by we slowly started to drift
Didn’t know what it was but I sure felt the shift
Once my feet got planted
I took her for granted
And the smallest things would set off a rift

A rollercoaster ride for a couple of years
But I never dreamed it would end up in tears
We’d get in a fight
But make up alright
Losin’ her forever wasn’t one of my fears

But one last fight today, and she told me we’re done
Could see in her eyes, no getting out of this one
She meant everything to me
Still I acted contrary
Now I’m packing up my car out in the sun

If I had my time again, oh the things I would change
Mistreatin’ those that you love is somethin’ so strange
Would show how much I love her
Put nothing else above her
And do all I could to save her from the pain

I’m drivin’ away for the very last time
No escapin’ the day that I pay for my crimes
Don’t know where I’m goin’
Just know I can’t stay here
Cos the life we shared just stopped on a dime

I’m drivin’ away for the very last time
I’m drivin’ away for the very last time
The future is a mystery
But haunted by the history
I’m drivin’ away for the very last time

I’m drivin’ away for the very last time
I’m drivin’ away for the very last time
Not looking for pity
But it’s starting to hit me
I’m drivin’ away for the very last time

Forever It Seemed

(1st Verse)
Tinsel’s goin’ up
Snow is fallin’ down
Looks a lot like Christmas
All over this town

I got the kids some presents
All scattered round the tree
And every time that they see ‘em
Ya know it lifts their energy

There’s a buzz that people get
Each year here in December
But for me it’s just a curse
Cos I’m forced to remember

(Chorus)
Round this time every year
I start feelin’ blue
Put on some good cheer
Cos what else can ya do?
But it’s painfully clear
And it’s sad but it’s true
How everything’s here
Just not you

(2nd Verse)
Ya know the kids are growin’ up
As kids always do
They wear a brave face
But I know they miss you

I got Paul his guitar
And Janey a new bike
And I found that big turkey
Ya know the kind that ya like

Ya folks are comin’ over
Finally get to meet Dan
I know he’s not you
But he’s a good man

It was not in my plans
To meet someone new
But you’re never comin’ back
And I’m left to live through

(Chorus)
Round this time every year
I start feelin’ blue
Put on some good cheer
Cos what else can ya do?
But it’s painfully clear
And it’s sad but it’s true
How everything’s here
Just not you

(Bridge)
Why’d they have to send ya off, fight that stupid war?
Can’t find no noble thing, worth you dyin’ for
There was no holocaust, no one landed on our shore
And the place that they sent ya, it’s just gone back like before
Used to think that they cared, but I don’t know anymore
All I know is how it felt
When they knocked on my door
Pulled their hats down to their hearts
And I fell to the floor

(Chorus)
Round this time every year
I start feelin’ blue
Put on some good cheer
Cos what else can ya do?
But it’s painfully clear
And it’s sad but it’s true
How everything’s here

Just Not You

(1st Verse)
Sittin’ onstage in my cap and gown
Scan through the crowd, see if you’re around
Spot a bit of action
Thank god that it ain’t you this time

Ain’t much chance you’d make it
If you did, I couldn’t take it
Worked too damn hard
Just to share this day with anyone else

I’m thinkin’ you’re not here
Still my heart is full o’ fear
Really just don’t know
It’s a chance, ya still might show

(Chorus)
Please don’t ya come
I want my day in the sun
Don’t need ya here to get me through
Don’t have the right
To go stealin’ my light
I got here in spite of you

(2nd Verse)
Ya know I earned this for myself
With a childhood on the shelf
All while you were in a bar
Maybe passed out in ya car

Ya years o’ runnin’ wild
Not a parent but a child
All the secrets that I keep
Smokes I butt when you’re asleep

Was so scared o’ bein’ alone
And the people you’d drag home
And for all the things ya missed
Well I pray, you just gimme this

(Chorus)
Please don’t ya come
I want my day in the sun
Don’t need ya here to get me through
Don’t have the right
To go stealin’ my light
I got here in spite of you

(Bridge)
Ya know I’ll always love ya in my own special way
Lots o’ different reasons you’re this person today
I’ll never give up
I’ll keep searchin’
For the good
But if ya turn up today
I might be forced to say
You just never loved me like ya should

(Chorus)
Please don’t ya come
I want my day in the sun
Don’t need ya here to get me through
Don’t have the right
To go stealin’ my light
I got here in spite of you

Please Don't Come

(1st Verse)
Johnny we’ve been friends
Since I don’t know when
You were the coolest guy back then
Through all the years
And a thousand beers
You were the wildest of all our friends

Now I see you in your suit
On your regular commute
Something inside o’ me dies
Where’d it all go wrong?
I know you think you belong
But in ya heart ya just not one of those guys

I know we all grow up
And start needing the money
But now you never laugh
You just say that’s funny
More machine than man
With ya long-term well laid out plans

(Chorus)
You were the funniest guy
With a million vices
Now you talk mortgages
And real estate prices
When’s the last time ya loosened up
And hit the town
Johnny I miss you but you’re still around

(2nd Verse)
I’m feeling sorry for you now
And the things that you do
You’ve got ya painted smile
But you’re lookin’ so blue
Tryin’ hard to fit in
With a game you just can’t win, it’s true

You used to roll with the punches
Take a few chances
Now it’s corporate lunches
With press conference answers
If they only knew
All the things you used to always do

I still see you all the time
But it’s getting so that I’m
Tired of just watching you fade
Johnny come out and play
We’re only half a mile away
This other guy has overstayed

(Chorus)
You were the funniest guy
With a million vices
Now you talk mortgages
And real estate prices
When’s the last time ya really
Let ya hair hang down
Johnny I miss you but you’re still around

(Bridge)
Your life it happens now
You don’t get to bank it
Just spit out the Kool-Aid
Say that you drank it
I know we have to grow and change
But your younger self
Shouldn’t be a stranger to you

(Chorus)
You were the funniest guy
With a million vices
Now you talk mortgages
And real estate prices
When’s the last time ya really
Just played the clown
Johnny I miss you but you’re still around

Still Around

(1st Verse)
Oh how I love her
Laying sleeping in the bed
Years since I last saw her
Our teenage love stopped dead

Back then she loved me madly
‘Til the night I broke her heart
Found comfort with another
And blew our world apart

Still can’t say now why I did it
Just some girl I didn’t know
Don’t have any good reasons
Young and drunk with an ego

Tried so hard to say I’m sorry
But she didn’t want to know
Told me she was leaving
Just had to watch her go

(Chorus)
Still can’t believe
That she came back to find me
I had given up
Thought my best years were behind me
Just look at her now
Sleeping beside me
Thought I knew for sure
My best years were behind me

(2nd Verse)
When I opened up my door
Found her standing in the rain
With that oh so pretty face
Thought I’d never see again

Said she’d finally made some peace
With that thing that I once did
How it was long ago
We were grown but still just kids

She’d heard that old song playing
Two hearts are better than one
Can’t pretend not to remember
All the laughter and the fun

And how you can’t just judge a person
By the worst thing that they’ve done
And what good is a darkness
That don’t one day bring the sun

(Chorus)
Still can’t believe
That she came back to find me
I had given up
Thought my best years were behind me
Just look at her now
Sleeping beside me
Thought I knew for sure
My best years were behind me

(3rd Verse)
They say that it’s much better
To have loved and to have lost
But anyone who says that
Never had to pay the cost

The years I spent without her
Such a waste of time
Worse again to live with
Was all down to my crime

Since that day I have seen others
Mostly got along just fine
Just could never recapture
What it was when she was mine

Hope one day she’ll be my wife
Now she’s let me be forgiven
Maybe we can have a life
Much better than just livin’

(Chorus)
Still can’t believe
That she came back to find me
I had given up
Thought my best years were behind me
Just look at her now
Sleeping beside me
Thought I knew for sure
My best years were behind me
Just so glad
She came back to find me
Yeah I just coulda sworn
My best years were behind me
My best years were behind me

My Best Years Were Behind Me

(1st Verse)
Well your eyes follow me
As I move through the store
It’s the same old stare
Since forever before
From ya counter back there
You clocked me as I came in the door

Hey I’m not lookin’ for your love
Not shootin’ for the moon
Just wanna shop in peace
On a Tuesday afternoon
Not breakin’ the law
Ya know the open sign was lit on the door

I’m not the only one in here
I think I need to mention
Cos it seems pretty clear
I got all your attention
Don’t understand
What the hell you think I came here for

(Chorus)
Ya little power trip
Is on a sinkin’ ship
The wider world don’t care for your views
Why don’t ya leave it alone
Don’t make me pull out the phone
And blow ya up all over the news

(2nd Verse)
Yeah I’m free to walk these aisles
It’s in the constitution
But the others get smiles
Instant absolution
For those who blend in
They don’t get ya view from over the stalls

Not true for those like me
Supposed to be free
But ya keep behind invisible walls
It’s nothin’ that I’ve done
At least not here today
Nothin’ that I said
I don’t have any lines in this play

(Chorus)
Ya little power trip
Is on a sinkin’ ship
The wider world don’t care for your views
Why don’t ya leave it alone
Don’t make me pull out the phone
And blow ya up all over the news

(3rd Verse)
Well I can call you on it
But it might all go south
You’ll pull that who me shit
With ya wide-open mouth
Actin’ so confused
Like I’m blowin’ your mind
Cos everybody knows
You’re the least o’ that kind

And you can call in some support
Make up a report
Swearin’ every word is true
And leave me pleadin’ out
Or bleedin’ out
While everybody’s comfortin’ you

Yeah I know what you are
Cos I seen it before
But the camera don’t lie
And you don’t get to hide anymore

(Chorus)
Ya little power trip
Is on a sinkin’ ship
The wider world don’t care for your views
Why don’t ya leave it alone
Don’t make me pull out the phone
And blow ya up all over the news

(Outro)
Ya little power trip
Ya little power trip
Ya little power trip
Ya little power trip
Ya little power trip (Your little power trip)
Ya little power trip (It’s on a sinkin’ ship)
Ya little power trip (Why can’t ya leave it alone)
Ya little power trip (Don’t make me whip out the phone)
Power trip
Power trip
Power trip
(Ya little) Power trip
