I walk into a tiny diner,
in my imagination or in a dream,
sit at a little table in the corner.
order a cup a coffee,
and some apple pie,
apple pie on the side

And I scribble upon a napkin,
pieced together pieces of poetry,
some old and some shiny brand new,
some old and some shiny brand new,
pieced together pieces of poetry,
some old and some shiny brand new

As outside raindrops drum
upon shimmers of sunlight
to the delightful beat
of rainbow'd umbrellas
oh dancing, dancing in the wind
up and down on glistening sidewalks

The trees are dressed
in rusty reds and orangey yellows
as beds of leaves lay at their feet
awaiting the blanketed softness of snow

As overhead geese honk,
their hurdled Vs fading into a
black speck in the distant sky,
as leaves tumble across lawns
to settle at the foot of a for sale sign
in front of a now lifeless home
where a trash bin stands at the end
of its empty driveway like a huge period

And I scribble upon a napkin,
pieced together pieces of poetry,
some old and some shiny brand new,
some old and some shiny brand new,
and I scribble upon a napkin,
pieced together pieces of poetry,
some old and some new,
some old and some brand new

And in the other corner,
a heartbroken piano man,
in a raspy roar of a rock 'n' roll refrain
belches out the kinda love
that turns umbrellas inside out,
so you'd never dance singin’ in the rain,
flips over magicians' hats,
so you'd never again hum abra-abracadabra

As the rain pelts the window panes,
and I see my beaten reflection
mirrored in one single drop,
and I shudder under the rippling effect,
of me slamming that door shut
and walking away from you,
walking away from you,
walking away from you,
walking away from you

And I scribble upon a napkin,
pieced together pieces of poetry,
some old and some shiny brand new,
some old and some shiny brand new,
pieced together pieces of poetry,
like rainbow'd umbrellas dancing
shiny and brand new,
glistening and dancing in the wind
