I watched the children in the streets today,
I watched them cry, I watched them play,
I watched the rain come tumbling from above.
A filthy yard with broken bricks
And factory chimneys in the mist,
And those back-to-backs where I discovered love.

Where once the echoing of the looms
Shuttered back in forth in evening gloom
And the factory hooters meant the end of shift,
In the cobbled streets where I was born
I sit and watch the breaking dawn,
And they’ve pulled the bus-stop down where I first kissed.

(Chorus)
Oh Manchester, you are my love,
Oh Manchester with grey skies above,
Where I lived, I loved, I spent my years,
Oh Manchester, wipe away my tears.
Manchester, you’ll always be the same,
Manchester in the pouring rain,
Oh Manchester,
You’re
My home town.

I took the rattling Metro out
To Salford Quays or thereabouts,
I watched the ripples fade on the canal.
I pulled at padlocked factory gates,
I kicked a can and cursed my fate,
And I threw a stone to ring the schoolyard bell.

If I had all my time again
I’d always walk in sun and not in rain,
I’d make the most of every daylight hour.
I’d chance my arm and take a risk
As evening falls over Newton Heath,
I’d savour every tree and every flower.

(Chorus)
Oh Manchester, you are my love,
Oh Manchester with grey skies above,
Where I lived, I loved, I spent my years,
Oh Manchester, wipe away my tears.
Manchester, you’ll always be the same,
Manchester in the pouring rain,
Oh Manchester
You’re
My home town.

And now the end is drawing near,
There’s no more pain and there’s no more fear,
I walk along these streets and feel at home.
For wherever it is I’m going to,
Heaven or Hell, I’ll remain true
To you, to you, Manchester……..

(Chorus)
Oh Manchester, you are my love,
Oh Manchester with grey skies above,
Where I lived, I loved, I spent my years,
Oh Manchester, wipe away my tears.
Manchester, you’ll always be the same,
Manchester in the pouring rain,
Oh Manchester
You’re
My home town.
For Manchester, you’ll always be the same,
Manchester in the pouring rain,
Oh Manchester,
You’re
My home town.
My home town,
My home town,
My home town.

Manchester in the Rain

I went outside, I watched the sun,
I watched the farmers' smoking gun,
and as the day slipped into night
I watched the dying of the light.

The moonlight came and spread above,
I saw all those who once I'd loved,
And as the starlight fell to earth
I realized that was our own rebirth......

(Chorus)
Come, come, come fly away with me,
We can be tomorrow, you're my destiny.
Though the clouds may be against us
though the tide you cannot turn
We'll fight for what is dear to us
We'll fight and we shall learn
What is love.

I walked upon the lonely shore,
I walked, I walked for evermore,
I watched the seagulls up above,
I cried because I'd lost your love,

I saw the lights upon the pier,
heard drunken voices in drunken cheers,
I walked until the sea was black
I walked right into Hell and back.

(Chorus)
Come, come, come fly away with me,
We can be tomorrow, you're my destiny.
Though the clouds may be against us
though the tide you cannot turn
We'll fight for what is dear to us
We'll fight and we shall learn
What is love?

I walked along the promenade
Cursed myself for I'd dropped my guard,
For all those things I couldn't say
I wished the rivers would wash away

The hurt, the pain, the world in the rain,
The hope, the dreams, the emptiness
the fading light of faithfulness.......

(Chorus)
Come, come, come fly away with me,
We can be tomorrow, you're my destiny.
Though the clouds may be against us
though the tide you cannot turn,
We'll fight for what is dear to us
We'll fight and we shall learn
What is love.
What is love?
What is love?

About Me

Bio

Interested in creative writing from an early age, I submitted my first radio script to the BBC at the age of 20 and shortly afterwards adapted the play for the theatre. The play won second prize in a regional competition, and this encouraged me to continue writing. In December 2010 I won the Avery Short Story Competition for the flash fiction piece "The List", and went on to be published by Everyday Fiction and the literary magazine Eclat. In 2014 my first screenplay, "Breaking Point", was shortlisted for the APM Short Screenplay Award.
