I don’t like things complicated
I’m not your traditional athlete
You won’t see me on a tennis court
Or in a speedo at a swim meet
I don’t care for basketball
And I do my fighting in the bar
I’m somewhat of a racing fan
I just don’t use a car

(chorus)
I’ll take those bucking bronco‘s
and bull riding is fine
I only need eight seconds
So it don’t take up too much time
I love them buckle bunnies
But barrel racers are more my speed
Give me a day at the rodeo
8 seconds is all I need…

I don’t care for football
The game takes quite a while
And all them pads and safety gear
Really cramp my style
I’m OK with the helmet though
And a pair of cowboy boots
Just strap me in, let the show begin
and open up the shoot

(chorus)

Golf is a good walk spoiled
and baseball takes forever
just strap my ass to a two ton bull
with gloves and chaps of leather
I only need 8 seconds
And then I get my wish
I can spend the rest of my day
With a rod and reel and fish

Now you can keep them trophies
I don’t really care
Just give me a stylish buckle
Something I can wear
The fact is I can handle
Just about any sport you play
But let’s put you on Snortin Morton
And see how long you can stay…

(spoken)
8 seconds, don’t seem that long does it?
8 seconds, it’s a lifetime while you’re up there
8 seconds, dang that was close
8 seconds, he ain’t lazy, he’s crazy
8 second, maybe you should give reining a try you look a little pale…

No one likes a heartbreak
But we’ve all had our share
And in time we know what we’re looking for
Someone who fits in our world
Who likes us as we are
Someone we can dote on and adore
But the heartbreaks make us cautious
Apprehensive to move on
Even if our mind instinctively approves
We hold back just enough
To protect our tender hearts
Afraid that we might make a wrong move

(Chorus)
But I
Feel like I know that this is right
It’s familiar
And at the same time it’s brand new
And I
Never thought I’d be here again
When along came most unexpected you
I’m not sure what this is going to be
But I would fall head over heels
If I knew that you’d catch me

It’s surprising
How natural this feels
I’m happier than I have ever been
Then I recall
Some of what I have been through
And I never want to feel that pain again
Then you assure me my heart
Is safe within your hands
And that you will never let it go
It seems I’ve heard this all before
But it sounds so real from you
I’m just not sure, how I can really know

(Chorus)

Take me in your arms
And make a promise with your eyes
And embrace my heart and soul tenderly
I will let myself go
And fall head over heels
If only you will promise to catch me

Head Over Heels

She doesn’t like the smell of diesel fuel on my clothes
Wants me changing in the garage and shower with the hose
She says some things gotta change
Some things gotta change

She doesn’t like the smell when I’m smokin a good cigar
She doesn’t like me hangin with the boys, at the local bar
She says somethings gotta change
Some things gotta change yeah

She said listen up buddy I’ll only say this one more time
Some things gotta change if you really wanna be mine
I hate ultimatums, but it seems like it’s the only way
It’s gotta be my way or the highway

My Friday poker game is somewhat legendary
But she’s always on my back asking if it’s necessary
She says some things gotta change
Some things gotta change

And when the PBR is on TV
She’s huffin and puffin bout something she wants to see
She says somethings gotta change
Some things gotta change

(Chorus)

Well I’ve been on my own for more than a little while
And I’ve grown quite accustomed to my comfortable lifestyle
And I ain’t gonna change
I just ain’t gonna change

Cause around here I live by simple ol rules
Work hard, play harder play cards, shoot pool
And it aint’ gonna change
I just ain’t gonna change

So if it’s your way or the highway I ain’t takin your lip
I got my own ultimatum which is have yourself a nice trip
Cause I ain’t gonna change
I just ain’t gonna change

My way or the highway

Take my hand and walk with me
Through life for just a while
I need some time to learn to read
The trepidation in your smile
I know it may sound crazy
But somehow this just seems right
And I may be wrong but I need to let you
Know something tonight…

I have fallen under
Your most disarming spell
It takes my breath away at times
In case you couldn’t tell
Perhaps my hearts reacting
To this paralyzing curse
But I don’t care; I’ll take a chance
And say I love you first

Stop and smell the roses
As the years go flying by
Where has all the time gone
We used to have for you and I
The kid’s events, the overtime
All the things we HAVE to do
But let me take a moment now to say one thing to you

I am still a victim
Of your mesmerizing ways
I smile and watch each step you take
As we waltz through every day
And though life is always hectic
And passes by so unrehearsed
I know what’s most important
And to me I love you first

All good things in life must end
And so too shall end my time
How fortunate am I to spend
My life, your hand in mine
There’s so much I have left to say
So many things I’ve left to do
But let me close by whispering
These final words to you…

Life without you would not be life
You made the sun shine in my years
I can recall not one regret
A single memory or tear
You’ve shared with me the happy times
And you helped me through the worst
I want you to know, before I go
That I love you first

Before I go, you need to know
That I love you first…

I Love You First

Party Life People

I ain’t never been accused of too much ambition
Common sense, good choice in friends
Or making real good decisions
But the one thing I excel at, that every event needs
Is someone who can take the reins, so a celebration can proceed

(Chorus)
Set up the tents and tables
Break out the bar
Haul out an amplifier and plug in my guitar
Let’s put some life into this party
And start living like
We’re the life of the party
Living the party people life

I can function hung over, almost was well as being sober
I only know ‘cause I’ve had the chance
To do it as I got older
And there’s days a little tequila, is the one thing that can heal ya
Ya just gotta cowboy up and party til the party feels ya

Chorus

We’ll party on your lawn at a backyard bar b cue
On a beach or in a parking lot
Or on a rooftop with a view
Anywhere we are is where the party’s gonna be
You just need the party life people to kick off festivities

Bridge

And just around the time me and my friends arrive
That’s when the party starts and everything comes alive
So crank up the amplifier, pour another round
The party life people gonna make this a party town

Chorus

Party Life People

There’s no way of knowing
What our fate has in store
Do we aimlessly wander
In the wilderness and explore
Is there a path for us to follow
Upon which we should always stay
Is there a guide in life where god shows us the way

Its the way the waves along the shore dance
Its the way that nature sings
Its the way god grows his garden
With the showers April brings
It’s the way the thunder shouts out loud
The way the lighting lights the way
Its the way we kneel beside our beds and pray
That's the way

Are there angels we should recognize
That help us see the light
Are our loved ones watching over us
When the stars shine on us each night
Are we granted gifts in life
That instinctively we do
Is there a way that God comes shining through

It’s the way an eagle takes to flight
The way the wind it sometimes howls
It’s the way the mountains pass the clouds
It’s in the query of an owl
It’s the way a misting rain bathes nature
It’s the way the willow sways
It’s the way we kneel beside our beds and pray
That's the way

Is there a way to say I’m sorry
And a way to learn how to forgive
Is there a way to learn to smell the roses
Slow down a bit and live
Is there a way that we can live our lives
So we have no regret
Does life remind us how to live
So we may not forget

It’s in the way the sun will rise each day
And the way it sets again at dusk
It’s in the way we feel inside
When God loves each of us
It’s a stream, it’s a rainbow
A snowfall, an autumn day
It’s God in everything in life
In a loving caring way…

Million Heir

Everyone who sees me
Shake their head and wonder why
I’m living life just day by day
Doing just enough to get by
I got no use for pensions
40 hour work weeks and such
I got no use for get rich quick schemes
And hard labor don’t thrill me much
But I got my secret weapon
Sort of my ace in the hole
Other people saving their hard-earned bucks
To help me reach my goal

So go ahead and fire me
Do you think I really care
I ain’t building a portfolio
I’m gonna be willed my share
So don’t judge me by the car I drive
Or the clothes that I now wear
I’m someday gonna be
somebody’s million heir

It’s true I lack ambition
And do things some might not dare
But people working their whole lives through
To not succeed just don’t seem fair
And they save it all for a rainy day
But the droughts they sure do come
And at some point, they’re gonna have to leave
Their rainy-day fund to someone

So go ahead and judge me
Do you think I really care
I ain’t adding to a 401K
Just bequeath my share
So don’t judge me by my trailer park
Or the way Gus cuts my hair
I’m someday gonna be
somebody’s Million heir

I’ve been waiting now a good long while
Stuck right by their sides
I think I’ve done right by them all
And heaven knows how I’ve tried
But they lived life too selfishly
And spent a good chunk of my share
Then they went and did me wrong
And found a different million heir

So now what am I supposed to do
This isn’t really fair
All my plans are ruined
I ain’t gonna be no million heir
And I ain’t got no one to leave
The junk I have to spare
So I guess I’m gonna have to find
My own less than million heir

Million Heir

She’d rather get her nails done
Than saddle up a horse
She’d rather go out dancing
Than watch a sunset from the porch
She's not crazy ‘bout my pick-up truck
She’d rather drive a Benz
She won’t go to livestock auctions
She’d rather shop with friends

(Chorus)
She’s my one in a million
My every dream come true
She’s the one I thought that I’d never find
She don’t get where I come from
But she loves me through and through
She doesn’t understand country, but I don’t mind

She thinks that Rodeo
Is a drive to shop on in LA
She thinks a drive is just romantic
On lazy afternoons on Sunday
She thinks the Daniels are related
The whiskey and the band
She thinks Oklahoma’s outer space
But she’s trying to understand

(Chorus)

She’s never known a hard days work
Beneath the hot July sun
She thinks hunting is barbaric
And she don’t approve of guns
She thinks that it’s just immature
For a man to have two first names
She doesn’t understand country
But I love her just the same

(Chorus)

She thinks John Deere is a break up letter
She chooses sushi over a steak
She’d rather go out for dessert
Than grab an apron, stay home and bake
She doesn’t mind the boys around
She doesn’t like dust in her hair
She doesn’t understand country
And I don’t really care

(Chorus)
She’s my one in a million
My every dream come true
She’s the one I thought that I’d never find
She don’t get where I come from
But she loves me through and through
She doesn’t understand country, but I don’t mind

About Me

Bio

My entire life I've written poems in rhyming verse. It's never been a popular literary genre, so it never occurred to me that there was any use for it... I never considered writing lyrics. I have no musical talent so the words never had a melody to me, at least not one I can hear; however, the words always seemed to flow. I get an idea or a phrase captures my attention and the words just seem to come. They typically flow in a natural direction and I think they lend themselves to work well for country lyrics or love songs and even christian music... I just don't know how to make that leap. This is all very new to me and I decided to throw some samples of my work here to see if it garnered any interest. There's not a lot of mystery to the meaning or inspiration and some of these I've adapted from poems into lyrics. I'd welcome an opportunity to collaborate with someone if there is a topic you can't find words for or if you'd like to edit what I have to fit your vision, add a bridge or reword to fit your meter. I never understood why the words come to me and I'm hopeful that this site helps me figure it out! Enjoy!
