I say here I am – teach me, love me, protect me, help me understand. They say be quiet, listen, learn, and follow our lead – and here, just sit and play with my phone.

I say I’m unique, I’m special – know me before you try to guide me. They say we’re all the same, no matter who you are you – we know what works cause it’s all been done before.

Chorus

Time races by in the blink of an eye – and no matter which way we’re facing we’re all moving in the same direction…toward an end of which we can either be proud or ashamed. Teach your sons what they need to know to think and to grow on their own to create their own world – embrace your failures don’t let pride be your guide – don’t make your children take the same weary ride - cheer on new ways to plow great roads to the future.

I say I’m getting stronger every day and can set my own way - don’t need to wait around to be happy – they say relax, chill, sit still keep your nose in a book - that’s what works – that’s what we know – look see all we’ve done to make this world better.

I say I’ve been educated, but still, I’m under-rated – help me make my mark and create my legacy – they say, you have to wait – you need more education – buy more, listen to us we know what you should do – we know what doesn’t work too cause we’ve done it so many times before.
I say school bills have me down, I can only afford to live downtown, and work ties up all my time. Can’t think deep any more – have no more energy to write my own score – just paying my dues and raisin’ my kids just like I was – they say, see we knew all along what was best for you, young man, you shouldn’t ever have wasted time trying to buck a wind divine – cause we’ve all been there before – so line up and follow us on down to mediocrity.

Chorus

I Say They Say

The man in the suit asked me to say – where I want to be five years from today. I looked out the window and saw children at play – I pointed and said, “there, that’s where I want to stay five years from today.”

The man in the suit rose from his chair – fiddled with his glasses, his face froze in a glare; he spoke and said, “there? That’s what you want?”

I said “I know what you want me to say – but I just don’t feel that way – I want to build my life now instead of spending my time planning about what may. Freedom and family are my focus for now – I’ll work out my future in time somehow.

Chorus:

So, turn your back on tomorrow and live for today – watch your sad life go drifting away. Face all your fears and put them away – find joy deep inside you this day.

The man in the suit smirked and put out his hand and said, “without a plan poor is how you’ll end up and a lonely old man. I’ve seen you before, head in the clouds, life’s not a dream, responsibilities, and work are much more important than what they may seem.”

I took the man’s hand and “thank you” I said – as he stared at me scratching his head, I said “I’ll take my chances with what’s in store" and as I walked to the door, I looked back and said, “Is this what you’d planned for yourself when you were my age? Wearing a suit, locked up in a cage? Look at you now all stiff and upset, don’t lie and tell me you’re not filled with regret.”

Chorus:

So, turn your back on tomorrow and live for today – watch your sad life go drifting away. Face all your fears and put them away – find joy deep inside you this day.

I can’t plan for a future I don’t understand, cause years on I won’t be the same man. Freedom is its own reward – live life minute by minute and take out all that is in it – don’t waste time planning a future for an old man you won’t even know.

Chorus:

So, turn your back on tomorrow and live for today – watch your sad life go drifting away. Face all your fears and put them away – find joy deep inside you this day.
