He walked like a sailor
Across the deck of a ship
Long and lean
Loose at the hip

No matter the seas
Nor how salty the air
His stride never altered
The Devil may care!

He leaned with the tides
And took it as true
That the Good Lord kept
One eye on the crew

Nor once gave the Captain
A single excuse
Could pull and climb rope
Like the knot on a noose

The clothes on his back
Clung tattered and worn
Faded and stained
Survivors of storms

The soles of his boots
Rubbed smooth underfoot
Shuffled the planks
Covered in soot

His whole life balanced
On the crest of a wave
Unbeknownst unto him
A watery grave

The Mariner

I look to the sun
In spite of the rain
To rise above
My earthly pain

Though times are hard
And tough to endure
When there's no justice
And nowhere a cure

The heart grows heavy
Amidst it all
Caught in the crossfire
With no one to call

So when things go bad
And then get worse
All you need
Is one little verse

I look to the sun
In spite of the rain
To rise above
My earthly pain

Look to the Sun

I stopped on a bridge
In a forest deep
And prayed the Lord
My soul to keep

Then tossed a penny
Into the stream
And watched the liquid
Copper gleam

Time stood still
As in a dream
Heaven on Earth
With me in between

I lingered awhile
And left too soon
The paradise found
That cold afternoon

I've passed over that bridge
Many times since
And spotted my coin
Still in suspense

But now there were others
Nickels and dimes
Scattered about
No rhythm or rhyme

A constellation formed
By errant hands
A song of hope
Submerged on land

Like stars at night
In the Twilight Zone
The duller the day
The brighter they shone

Penny for your thoughts

Hey, Big Man
What's your plan?
Towering over
The Promised Land?

Muscling in
On smaller fry
Hated until
The day you die?

You take what you want
And show no regret
Domination
By disrespect

But sooner or later
You're going to get yours
That's how karma
Runs its course

And when you die
No one will cry
Ever
Wonder why
Big Guy?

Big Man

Monkeys are mean
Do you know what I'm saying?
Sharp teeth and nails
Posture displaying

Playfully smug
Shrewdly cute
Handy with thumbs
The clever brutes

Man is no different
Or don't you agree?
One monkey does
What the other ones see

Aping each other
A Darwinian Dance
Pushing our luck
Happenstance

We laugh at them
And they at us
Our closest cousins
Making a fuss

Apes Not Gods

Why do I bother
Crafting words
No one will read
Nor ever heard

Or waste my time
Scribbling down
Innermost thoughts
None too profound

Oh why do I toil?
Words aside
Wit and wisdom
Aged and dried
Washed away
By morning tide

Scattered
Lost
Forgotten
Tossed
In a heap
Upon a pile
Of random thoughts
Penned for naught
Pointless all the while

Yet I cannot stop
Nor dare even try
To do so would give
Me reason to die

For the words keep tumbling
Around in my head
And the day the don't
You'll know I'm dead

For my heart beats poetic
Writing offhand
Meaningless verse
Etched in the sand

Why bother?

Slow and easy
That's the way
The old man lives
Another day

Playing it safe
Avoiding a fall
Life grows more fragile
The longer the haul

On legs of straw
And two feet of cement
Thinned hair turned gray
And bad back bent
Tributes of sorts
To a live nearly spent

His flesh and bones
Now worn and weak
Hobbling around
Missing teeth

Stiff in the morning
Sore by night
Growing old
The unwinnable fight.
