Midnight, a head full of twisted thoughts and broken dreams
Car headlights race around the bedroom like demented laser beams
Cracks traced a hundred times on the ceiling; splinters cross a frozen stream
Memories of the evening, the announcement you’re leaving, what we had, oh, what might have been

Memories of your smile, your touch, your smell, the way the hair fell on your face
The way your eyes ensnared me, your lips, your tongue dared me; in the way that your embrace
Warmed me as siroccos warm Moroccan desert dunes

By the way a haunting melody can bring heartbreak back in tune
Then you’re gone. All animation ceases. The lights go out and I’m all alone

Even my shadow; even my shadow; even my shadow; even my shadow
Even my shadow; even my shadow doesn’t want me

Dark figure walks soft cold sand below moonlit skies by moody seas
Pulls his coat around his body to block the icy, wintry, breeze
A black stallion, free, mane flows proudly, gallops by majestically
Man shrugs, forces hands deep into pockets full of pride but still empty

Wind rises without a care fills tired eyes with sand
Tide flows in breaks and waves, steals territory from the land
Like prison walls and battle calls take liberty from the free
As the autumn and the winter months take red, brown and golden leaves
The grey sky wraps itself around the unsuspecting moon
The land darkens and I realise, as the light goes out I’m alone in the gloom

Even my shadow; even my shadow; even my shadow; even my shadow
Even my shadow; even my shadow doesn’t want me

Love’s not something we should hide; not something to deride
It’s not something that is only found gazing deep into a lover’s eyes
It’s not found between satin sheets or inside a lover’s thighs
It’s not found in sprays of roses; only seen by candlelight

Even my shadow; even my shadow; even my shadow; even my shadow
Even my shadow; even my shadow doesn’t want me

Even my shadow doesn't want me

Deep in history, evilness was born
As countless human frailties made our attitudes deform
Greed replaced compassion ignorance took care
Fraternity revolted plunged us deep into despair; despair

Vanity took the high ground made modesty retire
Power crazed intolerants poisoned freedom with their desires
Destruction tempted peacefulness as the lonely take a whore
Anger forged pain and fear insanity made war; made war

The mist of love condensed and was twisted and was torn
Evilness came to life; four horsemen they were born
Fragmented but allied by an oath that they sworn
To feed on suffering, grief and dread, wrath and scorn; and scorn, wrath and scorn

We’re on the front line of a battlefield in an ever-fading light
Ever weakened by our bickering to our enemy’s delight
Famine lives amongst us growing fat on rotting food
While plague breeds in the shadows on our carefree attitude
War laughs ever louder as mankind slaughters when it can
And Death receives the royalties on the shallowness of man…

…’Cause here lies Armageddon; ‘whoops, apocalypse’
The Doomsday clock nears midnight but still the tocking ticks
Time for revelation, to face the truth, the consequence
We stand accused of apathy of decades living on the fence; on the fence

But the Horsemen can be wounded standing shoulder-to-shoulder, joining hand-in-hand
Slice through their supply lines with the brotherhood of man
Don’t blame your next-door neighbour; let discrimination thrive
Don’t uphold the law of the jungle so only fortunate survive
Don’t obsess yourself with Dollars, Pounds or some other currency
Don’t commit to lives of profit; financial heresy
And take care behind your curtains or when kneeling to the sky
That unnoticed and unaltered, grim reality goes by…
And thousands and thousands and thousands of human beings die

Reach for those in suffering offer them your hand
Throw the needy, needed life support; foreign cultures: try to understand
Reach for those who struggle and reach for those who strain
Shelter those in danger; throw your arms round those in pain

And turn your guns on suffering; your guns on pain
Your guns on poverty; help those without remain
Never let the lonely, be lonely again; again

Turn your guns on suffering; your guns on battle calls
Your guns on killing fields, sow peace instead of war
Let the desperate be desperate no more; no more

Turn your guns on suffering; your guns on need
Your guns on selfishness; your guns on greed
Don’t let the horsemen continue to feed; to feed

Turn your guns on suffering; your guns on hate
Your guns on apathy; then care and tolerate
Throw down your guns make Mankind great. Mankind great

Apocalypse

In the darkness the midnight sky deserted by the moon
As sound and colour go to sleep they awaken thoughts of impending doom
Stuck in my mind like some annoying tune
I contemplate:
Our existence, why are we here? And
When the time comes, to draw our last breath, do we have anything to fear?

Do you believe in coincidence not fate?
Do you believe that you choose the route your life will take?
Do you believe when you close your eyes there’s only black?
Do you believe, really believe, truly believe, there’s no coming back?

Chorus
I need to feel that there’s so much more to life than certain death and that we carry on
I want to believe that somewhere out there there’s a heaven and a hell where we go when we’re gone..
...from this World, to atone for all our actions and our sins where justice lives in angel’s eyes
And our lives can really begin; where we meet our maker and finally find out why
We’re born, we live then we die

Do you believe in fatalism and destiny?
Do you believe that your choices aren’t completely free?
Do you believe there’s a guardian angel by your side?
Do you believe, really believe, truly believe, in paradise?

Chorus
A place with no more loneliness, sadness, selfishness or avarice
With no more famine, pestilence and no more, Third World abyss
No more privilege and ignorance and greed
A place where life’s imbalances swing back to those in need
No more wars or conflicts
No more battle zones
A place of tolerance
Where no one’s on their own

Intro
At times it’s hard to see you living in your prime
To see you blossom in the springtime and bloom in summertime
And now you’re sat there sipping the last of summer’s wine
Your body clock is slowly losing time

Verse
And in the kingdom of this surfer all the pages seem the same
It’s another day of spam and routine messages again
Protocols and error codes are driving you insane
Locked inside an unknown zone, an undefined domain

Chorus
‘Cause my memory overflowed, bits began to fall
My CPU froze and programs failed to reinstall
My firewall is crumbling, I’m feeling vulnerable
A Trojan horse is waiting at my door
And I’m feeling vulnerable

Verse
At times I lose connection; sometimes I cannot think
Sometimes the words are in my head but the printer fails to print
Online conversations like dinosaurs extinct
Lost packets in subnet masks steal motor neuron links

Chorus
‘Cause my memory overflowed, bits began to fall
My CPU froze and programs failed to reinstall
My firewall is crumbling I’m feeling vulnerable
A Trojan horse is waiting at my door
And I’m feeling vulnerable

Verse
The mainframe needs rebooting to keep the hackers from my mind
A worm has burrowed in destroying address lines
Disruption, corruption, DNS they cannot find
One fine day, not far away, my username will be declined

Chorus
My memory overflowed, the bits began to fall
My CPU malfunctions programs fail to reinstall
My firewall is crumbling I’m feeling vulnerable
A Trojan horse is phishing at my door
And I’m feeling vulnerable

[SOLO/BREAK]

Verse
Sat staring out at nothing; page cannot be displayed
Trapped inside ‘The Worldwide Web’ so any virus can invade
Slowly, slipping down the cyberspace highway
Malware terror; fatal error; just the ferryman to pay

Chorus
My memory overflowed, the bits began to fall
My CPU exploded; programs failed to reinstall
My firewall has crumbled I’m feeling vulnerable
A Trojan horse gallops through my door
I’m feeling vulnerable
Soon, my OS will operate no more
No more

Verse
I’m sorry for my thoughtlessness; for all the hurt
I’m really truly sorry for always putting myself first
A time for honesty; to clear away the mist
And sink some fantasies aboard this doomed relationship

Bridge
Happy ever after fairy tales and heroes from above
Mass-produced romantics redefining love
For richer not for poorer, in sickness and mistrust
Enough’s never enough

Chorus
Sunsets and mountain tops shaped for looking back
Timeless starlit oceans of diamonds in the black
A green-eyed yellow demigod north of Kathmandu
Can see that we are over and our time together’s through

Verse
I should have held you in my arms every night and day
Fallen to my knees and begged for you to stay
Placed your feelings and needs along with mine
Maybe then we would survive and stand the test of time

Bridge
Egotistic fantasist with heart empty and cold
Mass-produced romantics buying dreams that we’ve been sold
Taking what I need from you just as we’ve been shown
To have but not to hold

Chorus
Sunsets and mountain tops shaped for looking back
Prehistoric starlit ocean diamonds in the black
Lucy Afarensis east of Timbuktu
Can see that we are over and our time together’s through

Chorus
Sunsets and mountain tops stir feelings from the past
Some green-eyed god shakes his head he knows we cannot last
Lucy Afarensis, there’s nothing you can do
Now we’re nearly over and our time together......

Chorus
Through, we’re through
We are nearly through
Lucy Afarensis, there’s nothing you can do
Now we’re nearly over and our time together’s through

Verse
I should have held you in my arms
I should have begged for you to stay

Our time together through

Verse
Late evening, sat still but mind cart wheeling
With quiet shallow breathing, I’m searching for a meaning

Verse
Late evening, I’m wondering how you’re feeling
I wish I could be healing the pain that you’re concealing
Late evening, lying staring at the ceiling
Sleep seems so appealing; how I wish that I was dreaming

Chorus
There’s a force, a gravity, pulling you away from me
A strange magnetic field never letting you get near
I hear, the ghosts of passion forge and shape your tears
So clear, but even roses fade then disappear
Disappear, our epitaph to the dreams of yesteryear

Verse
Early morning; last night’s memories come calling
Another day is dawning, it all feels so appalling
Late morning, my sense of right left sprawling
A conscience given mauling leaves me stuttering and stalling

Chorus
There’s a shadow on the sun; antique wardrobe’s skeleton
Incurable disease; madman waiting to be freed
Deceived, by all the things we read and then believed
Decreed, the ground we stand upon we can’t concede
I concede. I just can’t seem to give you what you need

Verse
Late evening, I’m wondering how you’re feeling
I wish I could be healing the pain that you’re concealing
Late evening, lying staring at the ceiling
How I wish that I was dreaming, with quiet shallow breathing

Late evening

Verse
Lonely sunrise meets a wary sky
Sea of redness waves the blue goodbye
Distant storm opens up its eye
Can run but cannot hide

Verse
Tired of hearing so many minor chords
Clichés, dark, depressing words
Introspective, rarely overheard
Crossed lines are getting blurred

Chorus
Let’s hear it for progress, just look what we have done
Some say ‘the End of History’ maybe they’re not far wrong
Another human being going for a song
Love is....... dead and gone
Let’s hear it for progress, just look what we have done
Purged ourselves of empathy, compassion forgotten
Born to random, indiscriminate nations
Brains washed and conditioned

Verse
Tim caps Ali for all their worth
Together on their own, against the world
A love so insular it cannot work
Well, not for all the Earth

Chorus
Let’s hear it for progress, just look what we have done
Learnt to live a life that’s only really good for some
Dizzy in the web the spinning doctors’ spun
Look what we’ve become
Let’s hear it for progress, just look what we have done
Turned right to loneliness, now what have we begun?
Down a path that surely leads to destruction
Of Homo sapiens

Bridge
I didn’t help my brother then they came for me
The love of money makes man act so greedily
Power drugs the mind corrupts so easily
If good people here do nothing then evil will succeed

Chorus
Let’s hear it for progress, just look what we have done
Learnt to live a life that’s only really good for some
Another human being going for a song
Look what we’ve become
Let’s hear it for progress, just look what we have done
Turned our back on family; to what have we succumb?
A world of pain and tears and global destruction
Of Homo sapiens; and our environment

Let's hear it for progress

Verse
Strange world that we live in
Strange thoughts that we all share
Strange values we believe in
Strange ideas of what’s right, what’s wrong, what’s fair

Bridge
Life’s a pyramid amid a human melting pot
A competition; a race to reach the top
Failure of the masses; successfulness for few
But what’s the point in millionaires unless there’s starving too?

Chorus
So we’ve got billionaires and luxury
The wretched, we’ve got poverty
Those without; gluttony
So many hungry mouths to feed

Chorus
Three worlds for the price of one
Palaces, estates and slums
Some in comfort, more afraid
We watch our brothers slip away

Verse
Strange world that we live in
Strange ambitions we all share
Strange ideals we breathe in
Strange pollution contaminates the air

Bridge
The ends justify the means to work your way ahead
Ladder of success using human rungs for tread
Mainly losers; winners are but few
But what’s the point in palaces unless there’s homeless too?

Chorus
So we’ve got millionaires and luxury
The wretched, we’ve got poverty
Those without; gluttony
So many hungry mouths to feed

Chorus
Three worlds for the price of one
Palaces, estates and slums
Some in comfort, more afraid
We watch our sisters slip away

Bridge
Money talks and we all listen
We’d sell our granny but grandpa’d miss her
We close our eyes and turn away
Losing humanity’s the price that we all pay

Chorus
So we’ve got billionaires and luxury
The wretched, we’ve got poverty
Those without; gluttony
So many hungry mouths to feed

Chorus
Three worlds at the price of one
Palaces, estates and slums
Some in comfort, more afraid
We watch our family slip away

Chorus
A-star inequality
A rich and poor disparity
A loveless aristocracy
A strange and twisted world indeed

Early morning; last night’s memories come calling
Another day is dawning, it all feels so appalling
Late morning, my sense of right left sprawling
A conscience given mauling leaves me stuttering and stalling

Chorus
There’s a shadow on the sun; antique wardrobe’s skeleton
Incurable disease; madman waiting to be freed
Deceived, by all the things we read and then believed
Decreed, the ground we stand upon we can’t concede
I concede. I just can’t seem to give you what you need

Verse
Late evening, I’m wondering how you’re feeling
I wish I could be healing the pain that you’re concealing
Late evening, lying staring at the ceiling
How I wish that I was dreaming, with quiet shallow breathing

Late evening

About Me

Bio

Old geezer (53) living and working in Gloucestershire, UK. I'm an Engineering Project Manager by day but a guitarist/songwriter in some of my spare time. Unfortunately, I've got a singing voice that only a mother (and cat's choir) could love.

CV/History

I've written quite a few songs over the years (started learning guitar/writing around 1999) but haven't got around to recording any as yet. I'm basically a lyricist writing about how I feel about stuff so my songs start with the words and then have a chord structure wrapped around them.
