Into The Light

Verse 1&2
The night you left,
you took the moon with you,
and stole the starlight too.
But you did not steal my flame,
that’s one thing you can never do.

And yes, maybe…
maybe you’re not my final Juliet,
but I look back without a regret,
and your name is carved so deep,
deep in my soul, so I won’t forget.

Chorus
Just remember,
that when a time comes,
when nothing feels good,
and nothing feels right.
When you’re all alone and lost,
lost in your darkest night.
There’s a beacon burning somewhere,
burning oh so bright,
and I’ll be there beside you.
I’ll be there to guide you,
into the light.

Verse 3&4
Yes I am a man,
and my eyes saw no ordinary story.
Too many failures, too little glory.
But all in all, even though you’re gone,
I don’t see you as a failure for me.

You’re always surrounded,
By lights that never seem to fade.
But somewhere behind the charade,
somewhere behind your spotlights,
I see the real you, alone in the shade.

chorus
Just remember,
that when a time comes,
when nothing feels good,
and nothing feels right.
When you’re all alone and lost,
lost in your darkest night.
There’s a beacon burning somewhere,
burning oh so bright,
and I’ll be there beside you.
I’ll be there to guide you,
into the light.

Bridge
Along with you, the whole band left the stage.
And my lonely heart keeps beating,
to this tragic rhythm, trapped in a cage.
But whenever you need a friend,
to help you sooth your rage,
or whenever you need words,
to fill your empty page.

Chorus
Just remember,
that when a time comes,
when nothing feels good,
and nothing feels right.
When you’re all alone and lost,
lost in your darkest night.
There’s a beacon burning somewhere,
burning oh so bright,
and I’ll be there beside you.
I’ll be there to guide you,
into the light.

Thank You Lady Z

My sweet lady Z,
you came in from the Great Unknown.
An angel…
on my tracks you were thrown.
You wrapped your wings around me,
and as I stood there,
mortally wounded,
still covered in the clouds of my smoking gun.
Listening to your words of sacred prayer,
I closed my eyes,
as I felt that the healing had begun.

You asked me questions,
and my answers made me weep
your touch…
so tender, but yet oh so deep,
awoke silent but strong suggestions.
And as I laid there,
alive and cured,
surrounded by open gates and a rising sun.
Breathing in the bright celestial air,
I opened my eyes
Unbroken, unchained, all fear undone.

Thank you lady Z,
thank you for turning me on.
For changing my goals and destiny.
Thank you lady Z,
Thank you for spreading your wings.
For holding a mirror in front of me.
Thank you Lady Z,
for breaking down my barriers,
for setting fire to my fences,
for being a rock in my river,
not just a stone in my sea.
You changed my flow forever,
thank you lady Z.

My sweet lady Z,
You entered areas within my soul,
And you may…
the master key gave you control.
you roamed footloose and fancy free,
and I stood there,
feeling each step,
as you carefully cleansed your way through.
The change you brought is beyond compare,
I closed my eyes,
and opened my heart for you.

Thank you lady Z,
thank you for turning me on.
For changing my goals and destiny.
Thank you lady Z,
Thank you for spreading your wings.
For holding a mirror in front of me.
Thank you Lady Z,
for breaking down my barriers,

for being a rock in my river,
not just a stone in my sea.
You changed my flow forever,
thank you lady Z.

There’s No Shade of Blues Dark Enough (always late at night)

Always late at night,
in your weak and hungry hour.
In your intoxicated mood,
when all systems fail.
That’s when you always call me baby.
That’s when you ask me where I’ve been.
You ask me where I am,
with who I am.

Always late at night,
you come knockin’ on my door.
You come close and pull me near,
and whisper softly in my ear.
That’s when I should draw the line,
but you always come before you leave.
Before you leave me alone,
alone again.

Now this pain, this pain, this pain baby…
I have tried and tried to put it into a song,
but no matter how blue the notes,
no matter how blue the lines,
the words and melody just don’t belong.
Cause there’s no shade of blues dark enough,
no shade of blues dark enough,
To express my inner sore.
No there’s no shade of blues dark enough,
no shade of blues dark enough,
to match my inner core.

Always late at night,
I just sit and watch time go by.
You’ve got me chained baby,
you’ve made this tough man cry
mmmm... and I’m just waiting here,
waiting right here for a sign,
a sign of life from you
or just a sign.

Always late at night,
in my weak and hungry hour.
In my intoxicated mood.
When all systems fail.
That’s when I always call you my baby,
and never ask you where you’ve been,
or ask you where you’re going,
or with whom.

Now this pain, this pain, this pain baby…
I have tried and tried to put it into a song,
but no matter how blue the notes,
no matter how blue the lines,
the words and melody just don’t belong.
Cause there’s no shade of blues dark enough,
no shade of blues dark enough,
to express my inner sore.
No there’s no shade of blues dark enough,
no shade of blues dark enough,
To match my inner core.

(Bridge)
You make me never want to play,
never play the blues no more.
Make me want to hang,
my guitar on the wall.
But as the sun goes down so do I,
and I watch the evening stumble and fall,
and then again late at night…

(Chorus repeat)

There's No Shade Of Blues Dark Enough

We had known each other for a day or two, no more.
When after a night out in the town,
we left a trail of textiles scattered from my kitchen to the bedroom floor.
Yes, we were naked as we could be, the moon was full and so were we.

Sunrise and she was quietly lying in the traces of carnal sin.
Silently sleeping, gently breathing,
and I was watching her, while my fingertips softly stroked her skin,
rewarded by a faint smile, a groan and other signs of innocence in exile.

And while I was watching her, while I was gazing at my pirate’s secret treasure,
she majestically raised her eyelids, and opened the gateways to my greatest pleasure.
And I leaned over to her face, and as I was about to say those words, those three special words,
she pressed her finger on my lips and said:

‘Shh…Don’t say it! Don’t you ever say what you are about to say.
It may seem alright now, but I know it will just bring hurt someday.
Please don’t say it! Don’t you ever say what you are about to say.
It may feel alright now, but believe me in the end it will all fade way.

She said: You can say that you are here to comfort me.
You can say that you want to kiss and go all the way with me.
When I’m feeling down you may take me higher.
When I’m alone and cold you may come in,
hold and caress me, fan my fire.
But promise me there’s one thing you will never do,
never say I love you
Promise me there’s one thing you will never do,
never say I love you.
Never ever, never ever say I love you’

I loved her and in the end lost her because I spoke out loud,
those three very special words,
which I promised not to say and which I very strictly vowed,
but one day I just couldn’t resist, just a moment after we kissed.

So I lived and loved, many a girl after that heartbroken day,
always saying those special words,
as it just felt right, just as everyone knows it’s part of the play,
but in the end all romances stranded, leaving me empty-handed.

And as I looked back, looked back on my failures and broken dreams,
those wise words of my special one weren’t quite as crazy as they seemed.
So one night a beauty leaned over to me, and just as she was about to say those words,
I pressed my finger on her lips and said:

‘Shh…Don’t say it! Don’t you ever say what you are about to say.
It may seem alright now but I know it will just bring hurt someday.
Please don’t say it! Don’t you ever say what you are about to say.

Just promise me there’s one thing you will never do,
never say I love you.
Never ever, never ever say I love you’

So if you like what you see,
just come on over here and love me for a day.
And just to protect me,
I will press my finger on your mouth and say:

Never Say I Love You

Too Good To Be True

I’m a soldier, a warrior, a bad motherfxxxer, but she scares the hell out of me, like no enemy has ever done.
She’s a danger zone, a minefield, a murderous battleground,
on which no battle will ever be won.

I hear her sing, her voice melodramatic and fragile like Ellen Foley,
always on the verge of breach.
Singing about leaving me, this town and past behind,
and moving to Byron Bay, to a house on the beach.

She touched my soul and wrecked my heart,
screwed my brain and smiled as I fell apart.
She scarred my skin with buddha and a gun,
a lifelong memo of her hit-and-run,
and I’m hurting, constantly aching, my body is black and blue,
but she’s too good, too good, too good to be true.

She turned me down and turned me away,
asked me to leave and then asked me to stay.
Turned on the lights, so bright it left me blind,
and did a good job of messin’ up my mind,
and I’m hurting, constantly aching, my body is black and blue,
but she’s too good, too good, too good to be true.

I watch her lips move as she speaks, but don’t hear a word she says,
not a distant sound as I slowly fall.
I stare into her dark and many I’s, and I hold my breath,
as I realize she’s no angel, no angel at all.

She’s far from strong but she always leaves me weak as I crawl,
crawl by her feet and I’m begging her please,
to bring down the walls on her borderline and allow me to lay her,
lay her on hallowed ground and lay me at ease.

She touched my soul and wrecked my heart,
screwed my brain and smiled as I fell apart.
She scarred my skin with buddha and a gun,
a lifelong memo of her hit-and-run,
and I’m hurting, constantly aching, my body is black and blue,
but she’s too good, too good, too good to be true.

coming to lay down my guns and surrender,
and while my heart was flooding,
she closed all locks to defend her.

and I’m hurting, constantly aching, my body is black and blue,
but she’s too good, too good, too good to be true.

She turned me down and turned me away,
asked me to leave and then asked me to stay.
Turned on the lights, so bright it left me blind,
and did a good job of messin’ up my mind,
and I’m hurting, constantly aching, my body is black and blue,
but she’s too good, too good, too good to be true

Solo

(bridge)
She had me coming,
coming to lay down my guns and surrender,
and while my heart was flooding,
she closed all locks to defend her.

Chorus repeat

Too Good To Be True

About Me

Bio

Born in the Netherlands in 1961 but raised in South Africa. Returned to the Netherlands with my family in 1977. Sent to serve on a UN peacekeeping mission in the Lebanon war in 1981. Made a career in high risk security and currently a COO of a large security company. Started some songwriting and poetry in the early nineties (first song in Youtube link) and five poems were published in poetry magazine in september 1997. Had a dry spell thanks to my demanding job for many years but just picked it up again a few weeks ago, when I wrote 7 songs in 14 days. Now I'm just curious about the quality of them. ;)
